American Idol Finalist Weighs In On Paula Abdul Controversy

May 02, 2008 01:18 AM by Joe Reality

Paula AbdulDuring American Idol Neil Diamond week, a mistake by Paula Abdul became a bigger story than any of the finalists’ performances. After all the finalists had sung their first song, host Ryan Seacrest called on the judges to provide feedback before the finalists sang their second song. A confused Paula Abdul said, “Jason, the first song, I loved hearing your lower register, which we never really hear. The second song, I felt like your usual charm was missing for me, it kind of left me a little empty. The two songs made me feel like you’re not fighting hard enough to get into the top four.”

Since Jason Castro hadn’t sung his second song yet, Paula Abdul’s remarks resulted in confused looks from the contestants and laughter from the audience. When Randy Jackson jumped in to explain that only one song had been sung by each of the finalists, Paula remarked, “Oh my God, I thought you sang twice.

When asked about the Paula Abdul incident, recently eliminated American Idol finalist Brooke White said, “Well, it is live television, anything can happen. Last week, I stopped and restarted my song, it’s just human moments that happen on the show. I don’t exactly know what happened with Paula, but stuff happens on the show, and when it’s live, things can change very quickly, and they decide in the middle of the show to change something, and I’m sure she just kind of got lost in the moment. She’s a good-hearted woman, and you just move on.”

When asked if there was any boosting up of Jason Castro after Paula Abdul said his second song was empty before he sang it, Brooke said, “Oh right, well you know what, Jason’s a very laid-back guy, I think he was okay. He does what he does, and he’s great. I always say, live television is very interesting. We call it fly by the seat of your pants television, and that’s what it is. You just kind of go with it, things change, it can be very confusing, you don’t always hear what’s happening, and you just go with it.”

Brooke reiterated, “That’s exactly what happened, and Paula, bless her heart, made a little mistake, it happens to everyone. Last week, I stopped my song, and restarted. We’re just humans doing our best, and you move on.”
