Marquis Cunningham was perhaps the biggest surprise elimination on So You Think You Can Dance so far this season. Judge Nigel Lythgoe accused Marquis of doing more tricks than dance during his solo routine on the results show. After Lythgoe revealed that Marquis was going home, the studio audience voiced their disagreement.
The members of the audience weren’t the only ones that disagreed with Lythgoe’s feedback. During a recent conference call, Marquis was asked what he thought of the judges’ comments. Marquis said, “The way I felt after Nigel’s comment and reference to the other two judges, Mia and Mary, I felt I didn’t do – I felt I didn’t do all tricks. Like, yes, I will admit there were tricks in there. You could obviously see that, but I felt I was also dancing with movement, and I was also dancing with technique, as well as performance and personality.”
Marquis also added, “I don’t personally agree with Nigel’s comment about how I had too many tricks and all it was, was tricks, because I think it was far from that. But I totally respect his opinion and him as a judge and him as a person.”
When asked if there was anything that he would have done differently about his solo routine, Marquis said, “If anything, I would have changed, I would have probably taken out one of the tricks that I did because, for me, I personally only believe I did two tricks because tricks in the dance world are considered acrobatic, gymnastics type of things. And I felt I only did two things under that criterion within my routine last night.”
When asked if he was surprised to be eliminated, Marquis said, “To tell you the truth, I was surprised. I wasn’t expecting to go home last night, and I wasn’t expecting to home this early. I wasn’t even expecting to win, but I definitely wanted to go even further than what I did. I was a little taken aback.”
When asked what he planned to do next, Marquis said, “What I have next going on is just – I want to get into teaching a lot, as well as performing because that’s what I love to do, but I want to choreograph, and I want to start teaching for whoever will have me. And also, next month, I have a competition to go to for a title that I uphold, Mr. Dance of Florida for Dance Masters of America. And because of that, it enables me to go for the national title, Mr. Dance of America. So I’m really looking forward to that because my teacher’s going to be there and my studio family from Florida where I trained will be there. So I’m very excited to see all of them next month.”
