So You Think You Can Dance And The Top 6 Perform
July 30, 2008 07:47 PM by DA Southern
So You Think You Can Dance has finally seen the amount of time needed to dance dwindle as the Top 6 took to the stage. With each dance taking about three minutes, add the judge critiques, throw in a few solos for good measure and you have an abbreviated show to use to cast your vote as we look towards the finale in a couple of weeks. Welcome to So You Think You Can Dance.
With the shocking elimination of Will last week, it is anybody’s game and tonight will be ever so important for the final 6. After the Top 6 danced a quick intro, Cat Deeley announced that we were one week away from the finale and introduced the judges, Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe
Courtney and Mark were first up to give us a Waltz and both Mark and Courtney were sure of their chemistry as they danced a Waltz to American Idol winner David Cook’s single, Time of My Life. Adam said that the Top 6 were very strong and did not see how America could possibly decide between the two. Mary was ecstatic with the choreography and complemented Mark on his growth. Nigel called the routine romantic and said the pair started the evening real well. After the first routine, Cat announced that Chelsie was first to dance a solo this evening followed by Twitch and, as usual, they were both very strong. At this point, the solos just don’t matter as it is all about how America perceives them in the routines.
Joshua and Katee were with Tyce Diorio as they danced a Contemporary dance sung to a Celine Dion song. Katee was brilliant as she leaped in and out of Joshua’s arms and he masterfully caught her each and every time. Adam called the two of them the most exciting duo that has ever graced the SYTYCD stage and Mary agreed with Shankman and gave a quick scream in approval. Nigel called them brilliant as well saying that he could see them in the finale and said it was incredible to see how Joshua has grown with no formal training.
Twitch and Chelsie were with choreographers, Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin as they gave the Mambo a whirl and it looked as Twitch was struggling a bit. But what Twitch lacked in style Chelsie made up for in raw sex-appeal as they glided across the SYTYCD stage. The ending was great and the judges, starting with Adam, said that Chelsie was “On fire.” Mary gave Twitch props for staying with Chelsie and Nigel added to the chorus about how great Chelsie was and that Twitch may have been a bit out of his element, but sold the overall performance. Katee and Joshua then danced her solos, as if you didn’t have enough visual information to make a decision at this point.
Courtney and Mark were up once more with a Jazz routine from choreographer, Sonya Tayeh, as she explained that the routine was about battling couple and it had more Contemporary elements in it as previously had been seen it Jazz numbers. Definitely no Jazz Hands in this routine. The number was definitely raw and sexy. Adam said it was “Sick” and said that, as a couple, they were unbelievable. Mary screamed approval once again and Nigel said that the pair of them were one of the highlights of the night.
The difficult-to-master, Pasa Doble, choreographed by Australian Jason Gilkison, was showcased next by Katee and Joshua. It has been the toughest dance this season on SYTYCD, especially by the judges. Joshua and Katee were again brilliant, at least from the average viewer’s eye and the judges were in full agreement. Mary said that “True Magic” is on stage when Katee and Joshua danced together and Nigel added his approval saying that Joshua could possibly steal the show. After the routine, Courtney and Mark performed the final solos of the night and it will truly be sad to send any one of the six home tomorrow night.
The final routine of the evening was a Hip-Hop routine from Tabitha and Napoleon Dumo for Twitch and Chelsie, a routine that was tailor made for Twitch. The routine involved a conductor’s stick and the couple truly exhibited an atmosphere of fun on the SYTYCD stage. Adam loved the routine and Mary said that Twitch has been outstanding and said that Chelsie kept up in Chelsie. Nigel said that none of the six should feel bad about not making it to the Top 4 and the finale as they all belong there.
America will probably shock us tomorrow, but it will be fun to see who is sent to the final 4. Stay with us tomorrow for the results and next week for the finale.
