For the third year in a row, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List has been nominated for an Emmy award in the Outstanding Reality Program category. Her stand up special “Straight to Hell” has alos been nominated for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special.
Kathy Griffin has travelled to both Afghanistan and Iraq to visit the troops and as a result she has acquired a new fan base of soldiers. As the troops return she visits them at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. touring the hospital to ligt the spirits of the soldiers, many who are recuperating from serious injuries.
She also visits their families who are staying at the Fisher House, which is a residential complex near the center set up for the families to reside in while their loved ones are in the hospital. She feels a deep connection with the familes and realizes that they are the forgotten ones–they have left everything to support the ones they love.
Griffin tries not to dwell on the sadness, and provides the families with a fun and crazy stand up performance. The show often starts out bumpy as the audience is full of chaplains and even children. With walk-outs inevitable Griffen chides,” I was performing for people in wheelchairs and amputees and they still walked out.”
The soldiers leave as much of an impression on Griffen as she does on them and she has been changed by it all. This cause is very dear to her heart and she truly lives the motto,”Laughter is the best medicine.”
