America’s Next Top Model: Transgendered Contestant
August 16, 2008 03:30 PM by Paulene Hinds
On the eleventh season of America’s Next Top Model, the show is educating the world in a whole new way.
Finalist Isis Tsunami, a 22 year old non-profit organization program assistant is transgender, but prefers the term,”born in the wrong body.”
She was born physically a male, but mentally she is a female and knew that she was from a very young age, as seems to be the case with most transgendered people.
Althought this is the first time that Isis has competed on the show, she has previously participated in one of last years photo shoots. On one of the intial shoots, which was designed to bring homeless youth into the spotlight, each finalist was asked to pose with several homeless partners, one was Isis. She told the finalists that she was a fashion designer and at that time she did not reveal that she was trangendered.
She amazed Jay Manuel at the time and left a lasting impression on contestants, Atalya Slater and Stacy Ann Fequiere.
“It’s an unprecedented opportunity for a community that is underrepresented on television, and we applaud Tyra Banks and The CW for making this historic visibility of transgender people possible.” GLAAD president Neil Giuliano told Us Weekly.
The eleventh season of America’s Next Top Model will premiere on September 3 from 8 to 10 PM ET on the CW.
