Tonight on Extreme Make-over Home Edition,Ty and the gang transform a run-down duplex used as a refuge for the homeless and needy into alarge and beautiful safe home for a deserving family.
Gerald Martinez moved his wife and family from Colorado to New Mexico when he was offered a job at a local church in Albuquerque. Instead of moving into a safe neighborhood nearby, he settled his family in the heart of the town, just minutes from the church and in a neighborhood of crime and prostitution.
He began to change the church into a refuge for the poor which included a cafe, a daycare facility and a working bathroom with showers, so the homeless might have a place to clean up.
Although most of the community welcomed Gerald,a few didn’t like what he was doing and he was attacked with a glass bottle in front of his house.
Through his perserverance and the communities support, the town has been transformed from what was once called, “the war zone” into a new and better place now title, “God’s block.”
As the rate of crime decreased in the area and the community began getting media attention, Gerald bought two other duplexes to create a “Mission Outpost,” where people would be able to recover from their troubles.
His open door policy has helped many people and the Martinez family feels blessed by their mission, but they are running out of family space and privacy is also an issue.
Now they face financial difficulites as well because they do not charge rent. With their finances dwindling away and their lack of family privacy, they are in need of a new and safe home where they can continue their mission to save the town of Trumbull.
While Ty and his design team of Michael Moloney, Tanya McQueen, Paige Hemmis and Ed Sanders as well as builder Atreus Homes & Communities and the hundreds of volunteers and workers rebuild their home, the family will go on vacation to Walt Disney World.
Watch the two hour special tonight from 7 to 9 PM ET on ABC.
