The America Idol runner up, David Archuleta is no runner up when it comes to chart topping.
The 17-year-old Archuleta’s “Crush” has debuted at No. 2 on the Hot 100 singles chart, beating the No. 3 opening of Cook’s “The Time of My Life” in June.
This is only the second time that a runner up has out charted a reigning Idol. In 2003, Clay Aiken’s “This Is The Night” outperformed Idol winner Ruben Suddard’s “Flying Without Wings” to become the best selling single for that year.
Archuleta’s song “Crush” is the biggest hit by an Idol Contestant since Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” which reached the number 2 spot when it was released.
As for downloads, David Cook’s song “The Time Of My Life” did better, selling 236,000 digital copies in its opening week of 166,000 copies of “Crush”.
David Cook also set a SoundScan-era record that first week, when 11 of his songs cracked the Hot 100, topping Miley Cyrus’ record of six. Only the Beatles have charted more songs at once with 14 spots back in ’64.
The two David’s are set to battleagain, when both of their albums are released this November on the very same day!
