On September 13, Ty Pennington, from Extreme Makeover Home Edition, received help from a young fan after running out of gas on the I-75 outside of Newport Michigan. He waved down a motorist who luckily recognized him and pulled over to help.
“He was flagging us down,” Diane Grassley told the Monroe News. “I usually don’t stop for strangers.”
Luckily for Ty, Diane’s daughter Colleen, 16, was along for the ride. “Mom, that’s Ty,” her daughter said.
They picked Ty up and drove him to a nearby gas station up the road and also gave him some homemade brownies.
Diane told the newspaper that Ty was down to earth and by her comment, “He didn’t act like his TV persona. He was really calm,” may have been surprised by his personality.
Ty posed for a picture and signed a note to Colleen that said she was, “awesome” to thank the family and Colleen said, “I didn’t really know what to say to him.”
The family had more surprises in store for them when they drove to the house in Toledo Ohio that Ty was working on for his ABC show. After showing the security guard the photo ofTy with Colleen they were let into the neighborhood to watch the home’s unveiling from a VIP section.
“I felt so privileged to be by the house where everyone else was behind barricades,” Diane said.
Extreme Makeover Home Edition airs Sundays at 8 PM ET on ABC.
