September 22, 2008 11:00 AM by Paulene Hinds

Last seasons Dancing With The Stars contestant Heather Mills, is promoting healthy diets for children. She donated one million dollars worth of veggie burgers, hot dogs, and chicken cutlets at a barbeque sponsored by Hunts Point Alliance for Children in the Bronx, New York this past weekend.

Mills told People Magazine, “My plan is to get healthy food out to kids and to get it in the service industry, get it in retail, make a fast-food chain around the world with healthy options and just keep doing my work behind the scenes.”

Mills has been an advocate for the vegan lifestyle since 1993, when her leg was amputated just below the knee. The doctors told her that her leg was infected and would have to be amputated further, but her girlfriend stepped in and told her to try a raw vegan diet.

“It sounded awful,” Mills recalls. But she checked into a natural-health care facility, “and I literally just healed and my leg closed, whereas all the antibiotics hadn’t worked,” she says. “I ended up saving my knee.”

After leaving the facility, Heather began leading a vegetarian lifestyle and four years ago, she removed all animal products from her diet and became a vegan. Her daughter Beatrice, 4 who is also the daughter of Paul McCartney,is a vegan too.
