Is there room for another reality dance competition show on television? NBC is hoping so, and they have enlisted a couple of the most successful producers in the world of reality television to help them. Superstar Dancers Of The World will be produced by Nigel Lythgoe and Simon Fuller and is scheduled to air on NBC in early 2009.
As most reality TV fans already know, Nigel Lythgoe and Simon Fuller launched both American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance. Lythgoe recently left American Idol reportedly to focus more on So You Think You Can Dance, but it looks like he has also been focusing on creating a new dance show for NBC.
Superstar Dancers Of The World is the current working title, so it could change before the show makes it to air. Superstar Dancers Of The World will feature masters of dance genres from around the world taking part in a dance competition. Michael Flatley from Lords Of The Dance will serve as host of the series.
“This dance competition is very much like the Olympics,” said Craig Plestis, who is NBC’s Executive Vice President of Alternative Programming, Development and Specials. “The physical feats these athletes and artists pull is mind-blowing, and we’re so excited to form what we hope will be the definitive dance competition to decide which nation has what it takes to be the best of the best in the world. With so much at stake, this is sure to be a roller coaster, and you never know what will happen next. Plus, with Nigel and Simon running the show, it will be done first class all the way.”
“This is the most challenging and exhilarating project I’ve ever done,” said Nigel Lythgoe. “Nothing of this magnitude has ever been attempted before on television. We will bring to America different cultural styles of dancers — each performer the best in their genre — and the sheer mosaic of styles and energy is going to be nothing short of awe-inspiring.”
Dancers from eight different countries will be competing in what is being described as “equal parts sporting event, rock concert and artistic exhibition.” Each of the eight countries will have a team of dancers consisting of two soloists, one duo and one larger group. The country list as it stands now includes Ireland, India, USA, Argentina, China, Russia, South Africa and Australia.
