Secret Millionaire: Owner of DUB Magazine goes undercover in South LA

December 10, 2008 09:42 PM by Britteny Elrick

Myles Kovacs, a self-made millionaire from East L.A. and president of DUB Magazine, will be going undercover this week as a Secret Millionaire. His wife, Cynthia, will be joining him to live undercover in South L.A., where nearly 50% of the residents currently live under poverty level. When the couple first arrives, theycan’t believe that this kind of place exists a mere thirty minutes away from their home…

Inside their new home, they are inspect the conditions to find it less than accommodating. Their first task is to go to the grocery store, where they find it quite a challenge to shop within their budget. As they walk back to their house, they notice police cars and ambulances all around them and feel very unsafe.

The Kovacs awoke to find themselves very sore from the sleeping conditions. They were surprised when they heard a knock at the door and discovered a lady with a plant, who was welcoming them to the neighborhood. She took them for a walk through the neighborhood and introduced them to some people. She tells them about an organization of women who have been through violence and invites them to come visit. Later on, they go to a Farmers Market, where they meet a lady named Cookie. Cookie works with women who’ve been incarcerated and they ask if they can volunteer.

When they arrive to help Cookie, they meet Susan, founder of the program. They discover that Susan was in jail herself, for fifteen years, and now she strives to help other women get back on their feet. She tells them of all the women who they can’t afford to take into the program. Apparently, when the women get out of jail they are dropped off with $200.00 and nothing to their name, which forces many to go back into the streets and the activities which caused them to go to jail in the first place.

The next morning, Myles takes a walk and wanders to a horse’s stable, where he finds children riding. He meets Myisha, whose son was shot a couple of years ago, who is in charge of the place. She says she does it to keep the kids off the streets and help them learn something positive. Meanwhile, Cynthia goes with her neighbor to the mothers against violence support group. She listens to some of their stories and it breaks her heart. Many of them have lost sons at a very young age to gang related violence. Cynthia shares a story of her own about her first marriage. She tells them about how her first son was stabbed in the head when he was five years old and it caused him to be brain dead.

When it comes time to reveal their true identity, they are very nervous. Their first stop is the Myisha at the horse stable. Myles tells her that all of his feelings were true, but he wasn’t honest about himself and she is shocked. He gives her a check for 50k. Then they travel to Susan at the the women’s organization and give her 50k. Finally, they go back to Cookie and gives her 50k and one of his own cars. He says that what they have in this community is priceless and their hearts are bigger than anyone he has ever met. He wishes that the experience didn’t have to end.
