American Idol: Kara DioGuardi Says Male Contestants Hold Edge

January 07, 2009 02:00 PM by Paulene Hinds

The newest American Idol judge, Kara DioGuardi says that this season the male contestants have been coming on strong and are holding an edge as the show enters into season 8. The question is…will they continue to climb to the top or will a female edge them out in the end?

Kara DioGuardi said she spotted some uniquely talented performers during tryouts, especially among the men. But the pressure is on them to keep improving or they’ll leave the door open for an underdog.

“They may have been great at the beginning but as the season goes on they have to keep upping it,” she said.

Kara DioGuardihas also been surprised by how many contestants believed they were popstars when in fact they couldn’t sing at all.

“A bunch of them would come on and really believe that they were great. That was one of the biggest shocks for me. I was thinking, `Wow, are you kidding? … I think this is going to be a hobby, and that’s a great hobby to have.’”

Kara DioGuardi should know a singer when she sees one. She has worked with Celine Dion, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill and even her co-judge, Paula Abdul to name just a few.

Kara DioGuardi’s main goal as a new judge on American Idol (besides to bring up the ratings) is to teach the contestants and show the viewing audience that she brings a uniqueness to her role.

“I hope people find I bring something to the show that’s different, and I can help these contestants learn something, whether they win or not,” she said.

The season premiere of American Idol begins January 13 from 8 to 10 PM ET on FOX.
