Kara DioGuardi is the new kid orwe shouldsay, newjudge on the block on American Idol and she admits that being in that position wasn’t easy. She spoke to reporters this past Thursday in a conference call to talk about her new role on the hit show and said, “It was a little unnerving. I didn’t know where I was going to sit and when I was going to speak.”
Now that she has been judging for a little bit, she has her own views on what kind of judges she thinks Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson are and she didn’t mind telling us. “I would say that Paula has a lot of heart. I would say that Simon pretty much tells it like it is. Sometimes he can be pretty harsh, but he’s usually right,” she said. “And Randy… He’s the diplomat.”
When asked which judge Kara DioGuardi feels that she is the most like she said, “I think I’m a combination of all of them,” adding, “I do like to say it like I see it, I don’t mince words, but I do have a heart. When you’re dealing with creative people who have some talent, you want to encourage them.”
The one thing that Kara DioGuardi says she is bringing to the table that was absent on American Idol before is the fact that she has worked with a lot of amazing singers, from Christina to Pink to Celine Dion. She told People magazine, “I’ve been in the studio with them when they’ve actually recorded songs that we’ve co-written. I’ve worked really closely with them and given them guidance and I think that distinguishes me.”
Kara DioGuardi also likes the dynamics of the judging team now and especially enjoys what her and Paula are bringing to the table. She said, There are times definitely that Paula and I have kind of , let’s say, there’s a little girl power going on. With any kind of change, it brings out a different dynamic on the panel.
And when she was asked about Simon Cowell’s claim that she and Paula Abdul were ganging up on him during auditions she quipped, “When he deserves it, we give it to him. And believe me, he deserves it sometimes.”
With Simon given the power this season as a tie-breaker Kara DioGuardi said that if Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul said yes to a contestant, she felt that it would come down to her because she knew that Simon Cowell would say no, so she felt like she had to make the decision whether to give the person another shot or not.
When it comes to agreeing or disagreeing with her fellow judges, Kara DioGuardi says there have been times that she has agreed or disagreed with them all. “I definitely can sometimes see where Simon’s coming from,” she said. “I wouldn’t have said it quite the way he said it, but I also do believe in second chances early on , Sometimes you see potential in people and you have to think past some of the mistakes they made because they were nervous. But third chances, that’s another story!”
