Two-time Dancing With The Stars champion Cheryl Burke will be making a special guest appearance on this week’s episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Ty Pennington and his team are building a better and safer home for the Grys family, whose youngest son has brittle bone disease.
The Grys family lives in Pekin, Illinois includes Stephen and his wife Jean, who have been foster parents to over 250 children. Stephen Grys works as a special education teacher. The Grys adopted son Jake is eight years old and suffers from brittle bone disease and dwarfism. Even though Jake was not expected to live more than a few weeks past his birth, he has defied the odds and surprised doctors with his above average intelligence and bursting personality.
Jean Grys started the Illinois Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Brittle Bone Disease) Foundation Support Group. The group helps to find adoptive placements for children with Osteogenesis Imperfecta from India and China. In addition to the Illinois Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation Support Group, the entire family is actively involved in raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, St. Jude, Easter Seals and the Special Olympics. Siblings Josh and Zach Grys work as camp counselors for the MD camp, and Abagail and Rebekah Grys have worked with disabled children at Sunshine Camp.
While Jake Grys desires to do things independently, his bones are so delicate that he cannot get a drink, go to the bathroom, turn on a light or even open a door. Ty Pennington, his design team, local builder Design Built Homes and hundreds of volunteers will help rebuild the Grys home to give Jake more independence. The design team includes Michael Moloney, Ed Sanders, Rib Hillis and Didiayer.
Also, designer Rib Hillis will meet with Dancing With The Stars professional dancer Cheryl Burke in order to get help designing a special theme room for daughter Rebekah’s room. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition airs on Sunday, January 11 from 8 PM to 9 PM ET on ABC.
