Nigel Lythgoe is the executive producer of So You Think You Can Dance and now, Superduds, oops, we mean Superstars of Dance, which he leftAmerican Idolto produce. As he continues to pitch Superstars of Dance as a fantastic show, he admits that he is missing American Idol. No kidding.
Superstars of Dance features professional dancers from eight different countries. There are groups, couples and soloists who dance in an Olympic inpsired format, with judges from the participating countries scoring the routines. The show is hosted by Lord of the Dance Michael Flatley and former TRL host, Susie Castillo.
Nigel Lythgoe said that the show was inspired by a Bollywood routine that was performed on So You Think You Can Dance and also a Russian routine that everyone liked in the finale of the show. Nigel Lythgoe said, “We had the option to create another dance show, and I didn’t want to make another competition of wannabes. Otherwise, it’s just a pale imitation of Dancing with the Stars or So You Think You Can Dance, which so many people have attempted in the last year. I bet you the majority of them do not come back, because they were just not strong enough… . With So You Think You Can Dance there’s a group of kids who want to be dancers. With Dancing with the Stars, that’s a group of celebrities who want to dance. These are people who dance.”
If you have had the unpleasant opportunity to watch Superstars of Dance you will realize that it pales in comparison to the so called wannabes as Nigel Lythgoe calls them. Yes, some of the dancing is okay…maybe even great, but let’s face it…the show sucks!
The way the routines are presented are all over the place, making it difficult to see the comparisons among the dancers, well maybe that is fair as it is hard to judge apples against oranges, but it appears to be unorganized when they use that style.
Then there is the judging. Aside from a few comments made by the judge that is unable to vote for the routine, there is little critiquing going on at all. It is like the Olympics in that way…boring! Every once in a while the Russian judge will throw in a funny comment, which makes you think that he could judge this show himself, but other than that the viewer has no idea what the dancers did well or didn’t do well! Even in amateur competitions the dancers receive feedback!
The set of the show is not that great either, and if they are trying to make us focus on the dancers, then the producers have missed the mark. With little dancing actually going on…we need something to stimulate our eyes. Give us some fireworks behind the Chinese team that has the ballerina being balanced by her male partner. At least that way we can say, “Ooooh, ahhhhh!”
Nigel Lythgoe thinks that other dance shows will not return because they are too similar to So You Think You Can Dance or Dancing With the Stars, but I think that he has tried too hard to be different with Supertars of Dance and has completely taken us to the dark side of a competitive dance show.
Maybe Nigel Lythgoe is trying so hard to make us love this show because he knows in his heart that it stinks! That could be why he said, “I miss Idol,” when asked how the shift away from American Idol has been for him. He did add however, “At the same time, I’ve been able to go to South Africa, Australia, and now create this (Superstars of Dance), so I’ve found good use for my time.” He must be delusional if he thinks this was a good use of his time!
Maybe Nigel Lythgoe will open his eyes before the end of this series and see that he missed the mark with Superstars of Dance. He has left the door open to returning to American Idol, which we are sure would welcome him back with open arms. When asked if he would consider returning to the show, Nigel Lythgoe said, “Who knows? At this moment in time, I’m moving on, but Idol’s going to be around for a long time. It’s a great show…. Never say never. James Bond said that once, and he came back.”
