March 05, 2009 04:00 PM by Paulene Hinds

This past week The Biggest Loser contestant Dane Pattersonand the hit reality TV series has landed in hot water over fabricating that Dane Patterson completed a 26 mile marathon in his home town in just under 4 hours. It turned out that Dane Patterson was picked up by an NBC field productionvan and driven to the finish line, never completing the race at all! Now Dane Patterson says that he will not give back the medal he received for crossing the finish line.
In a conference call with NBC Dane Pattersonstated, “I was proud that I accomplished what I accomplished….In my mind I ran the full 26 miles.”
He also said that he didn’t realize that such a big stink was going to be made about the issue and thought that he was doing the right thing by helping thefield producer get the final shot. “I was extremely exhausted” when the field producer approached, and “you never know what’s going to make it on the show,” he said. He also said that he had no idea that what he did would lead to a misstatement of the facts. “It was kind of embarrassing actually. It wasn’t true. It looked bad.”
Dane Pattersonalso commented that the race organizers knew what was going on and gave him the medal anyway. So, given that he did go back to where he left off and ran every inch of the course, he’s hanging on toit and he feels that he has earned it. “I obviously didn’t mean for any of this to happen. The medal was given. I would not give that back. I’m proud of it.”
