Last night’s theme on American Idol was “Contestant’s Choice”or as they cleverly titled it to appease their sponsors “Top Downloads on iTunes.”One would think that with all of the songs to choose from in the whole entire world… it was going to be a pretty awesome night. Not so fast. From the song choices, to the execution, to the judges comments… last night’s showwas oozing with weirdness.

Starting with Anoop’scomplete train wreck ofa karaoke version of the Usher song, Caught Up, which received harsh criticism from the judges, especially Kara. Anoop even surprised me a bit when he shot back at Kara stating that he chose “one of the songs from one of the most popular R&B artists ever.” Um, okay? Well, what does that have to do with the fact that you can’t dance, Dawg? He continued to say that he aspires to be an R&B artist, which I don’t think even the brightest optimists in America can see coming to fruition.

Then, poor sweet Megan Joy singing her version of the Bob Marley song, TurnYour Lights Down Low. Apparently, awkward arm movements aren’t the only problem plaguing this beautiful blonde. This girl can’t seem to pick a decent song to save her life. And I mean that literally, because she’s probably about to be voted off after that. Simon hit it right on the head when he told her that she keeps choosing songs that she likes, but that doesn’t mean she can sing them.

Allison Iraheta is another one who received a lot of heat, but not only for her song choice. The American Idoljudges had a particularly hard time accepting her outfit, which was a conglomeration of goth, indie, and 80′s clothing styles morphed into one very perplexing look. She did try her hand at the guitar though, which I thought was a nice addition to her version of the No Doubt song Don’t Speak.

The judges spared no feelings last night as they lashed out on the contestants for all sorts of things. At one point, Kara snapped back at the audience when they wouldn’t stopbooing saying, “I’d like to see you get up here and do this.” A couple highlights of the night, however, were Kris Allen’s outstanding performance of Ain’t No Sunshine and Danny Gokey’s What Hurts The Most.
