Dancing With the Stars Recap 04/20/09: A Mixed Bag Of Fun

April 20, 2009 07:15 PM by Paulene Hinds

Tonight on Dancing With The Stars the contestants not only had to perform their own couple dance, but they also had to dance in a group routine which will be scored by the viewers only. The pro dancers tonight were dressed by their star partners as they designed their outfits this week. The stars danced a variety of styles of dance hoping to stay in the running by winning both the judges andviewers votes tonight.

The first dancers tonight on Dancing With The Starswere Melissa and Tony dancing the Argentine Tango. Melissa was having difficulty bringing out the maneater in herself, so Tony took her to meet Desperate Housewives actress, Teri Hatcher, who showed her how to be sexy. The dance was flawless and the lifts were sooo sexy in their routine.

Len said he thought it was fantastic and it was executed beautifully. Bruno said that the dance was the revenge of the Lolita. Carrie Ann said that the dance was by far the best Argentine Tango she had ever seen and the lifts were fantastic! (they were allowed for the style of dance) The judges gave them scores of 10, 9 and 10 a 29 out of 30.

Next Lawrence and Edyta were up with a Waltz. Edyta thought that it would be difficult for Lawrence to be graceful because he is such a big guy. Lawrence said he was getting his smooth on. What Lawrence lacks in technique he makes up with his beautiful personality. Lovely routine.

Bruno said that Lawrence definately got his smooth on. Carrie Ann said that she saw more freedom in his movement and he looked like he was enjoying the dance. She also complimented him on the dress thathe designed for Edyta. Len said that overall he was shocked at how well Lawrence performed the dance and it was unfortunate that the dress got caught on Edyta’s head. The judges scores were triple 7′s tonight a 21 out of 30.

Lil’ Kim and Derek were dancing a Rumba tonight on Dancing With The Stars. The couple were trying to tone down Lil’ Kim’s sexiness to impress Len. Derek was having a difficult time pulling a routine together to please all of the judges. It looked like they were trying to hard to please Len…but the routine had sweet moments to it.

Carrie Ann said the dance was understated and underwhelming. She should have brought her best game forward. Len said that parts of the dance were great and not to try and please one person, but to do what they do best. Bruno said it was a good rumba and that she should bring back the raunch. The judges gave them 9, 8 and 9 a score of 26 out of 30.

Chuck and Julianne came out next to dance a Samba this evening. Julianne was really focusing on the technique this week to get the judges scores, but Chuck said that he dances for the fans! Their dance was saucy with clean foot work.

Len said that he liked it a lot and it was his best dance to date. Bruno said that Chuck must want it so badly. Carrie Ann stood up and danced. The judges gave them scores of 9, 9 and 9 a score of 27 out of 30. Chuck was only hoping for one 9 and ended up with triple 9′s…wow!

Ty and Cheslie were performing the Waltz tonight. Jewel came in and explained that Ty is not really a romantic guy, but he is heartfelt and that is where they should find the connection in their dance. Ty dedicated the dance to his wife because she brought out the romantic side in him. The Waltz definately is his style of dance. He knows how to hold a woman.

Bruno said Ty you are back in the game. Carrie Ann said Ty you are such a beautiful frame for your partner to dance in. Len said that Ty had good holds and posture and the dance was well done. They received three 8, s a 24 out of 30.

Shawn and Mark hit the ballroom floor next and this week they were dancing aCha Cha. Shawn was so busy this week that she missed the group dance and was going to have to learn it on her own. She was really overtired and wasn’t picking up the dance steps as easily as she usually does. She was hoping to pull it off as she took to the dance floor. Shawn was amazing as usual, even if she only had a few days to practice.

Carrie Ann said that the dance came to life for her tonight. Len said that Shawn did her dance exactly like it should be done. Bruno said it was like watching a young Debbie Reynolds, young and flamboyant. The judges gave them scores of 9, 9 and 10 a 28 out of 30.

The last couple dancing tonight on Dancing With The Starswere Gilles and Cheryl, dancing the Vienesse Waltz. Gilles was dancing too Latin so Cheryl took him to a swim instructor to teach him how to be smooth. Latin of Vienesse…it doesn’t matter, it is all sexy to me!

Len said that it had romance and rotation and overall it was superb. Bruno said it was so glamorous. Carrie Ann said that she thought that Gilles is the most graceful maledancer she has ever seen. The scores were triple 9′s 27 out of 30.

Next was the group dance choreographed by Christian Perry. The dance was a flashback to the 1960′s and it was nothing short of fantastic. What a blast from the past!

Bruno said that the the guys produced sublime silliness. Carrie Ann said that the girls nailed it and Len said that is was fun, had energy and took him back to 1964 when he once went clubbing in England!

Tomorrow night, Dancing With The Starsreturns at9 PM ET on ABCwith another elimination and if you missed the group dance tonight, you can catch it again tomorrow night at the beginning of the show!
