American Idol: Kris Allen’s Hometown Friends Speak Out

May 08, 2009 11:00 AM by Britteny Elrick

Kris Allen has captured the hearts of Americans everywhere, but especially those from Conway, Arkansas. The small town is comprised of under 100,000 people, almost all of whom are fully supporting their hometown Idol, Kris Allen. MTV recently took a trip to Conway to speak to some of Kris’ supporters and friends…

People all over the state of Arkansas have fallen in love with Kris. Sonja Keith, who organizes the Kris AllenKick Awesome Task Force, said: “Kris lives across the street from me, and I’ve never met him, but I was so impressed with what people were telling me about him that I decided to get behind him and do everything we can since he got to Hollywood.”

Sonja publishes a local magazine and admits that she never before watched the show until a writer pitched her a story about Kris when he made the top 36. Since then, she has organized a group of volunteers to support him in getting to the finals. On most voting nights, the goal of the team is to send out 500,000 votes as a collective group. “Our committee is made up of people who are friends of Kris, who’ve gone to church with him, as well as business leaders, elected officials, restaurant owners and folks at the University of Central Arkansas,” she said.

Sonja continues, “The reason we’re doing this is because Kris is a great guy, and he’s the caliber of performer/entertainer we need. I think that he’s very family-oriented and the kind of guy I wouldn’t worry about my children listening to or going to a concert [to see].”
