More than 25,000 people showed up in Milwaukee onFriday to welcome homeAmerican IdolDanny Gokey. Not only did the city throw a parade and a concert in his honor, but he was also given the chance to sing the national anthem at the Brewers-Cubs game.
Fans everywhere were wearing Danny look-a-like glasses as he took the stage. “Pray for my voice… You want me to be honest with you? I’m not that good,”Danny said, according to PEOPLE. Danny sang for his hometown audience at the Faith Builders Christian Church in Milwaukee, where he started attending in 2000 and has since become the praise and worship leader. The pastor of the church, Pastor Jeff Pruitt, said, “It was very emotional to see him up there. I was at home and I just cried like a baby. I was so proud of this kid and to see what he walked through losing his wife in August and to see him come out of total despair and have something to look forward to in life. It was totally surreal.”
After losing his wife Sophia to a congenital heart defect just weeks before he tried out for American Idol, Danny has often said that she is his biggest inspiration. Danny keptthe promise that he had madeto Sophia before she died, which was that he would try out for the show. In an interview posted on americanidol.com Danny said,”We were happy and we were going to move forward, and then she passed away. Something on the inside of me just bubbled up, and I feel like I have so much purpose, I feel like there’s a message that I have to give.”
