As Ryan Seacrest opens the final performance show on FOX, finalists Adam Lambert and Kris Allen are shown in their humble beginnings – on tape at their first audition declaring with pseudo-confidence that they are the next American Idol! Randy Jackson is introduced and is looking eye-popping tonight in a lavender and white checked shirt paired with a dark purple polka-dotted tie! The other judges’ names are called, and then the two men of the moment are brought out! Kris won the coin toss and has chosen to go second. Ryan explains that the guys will each sing three songs – their favorite performance from Idol so far, one chosen by producer Simon Fuller, and their new signature song co-written by Kara DioGuardi!

Round One

Adam Lambert is first up, performing Mad World. The ever-dramatic singer slowly descends to the stage in a dark trench coat amidst a sea of fog. His performance is moody, edgy, smooth and notably understated. Randy gives him an A+! Kara says he’s an incredible artist! Paula, predictably, flirts, then says she is unbelievably proud. Simon calls the performance a little overly theatrical, causing the audience to boo, but he’s right on the money!

Kris has chosen to sing Ain’t No Sunshine, and is playing the piano. Some might say this wasn’t his strongest song, so it’s a dubious choice. He gives a solid performance though, full of vocal nuances. Randy calls it one of his best performances ever on the Idol stage! Kara agrees, saying he created an intimate bond with everyone in his audience! Paula stutters that he awakens the spirit – a true marking of a great artist. Simon goes for the scathing honesty again, saying he wasn’t sure he was the right choice last week – but he takes it all back after that performance! Simon says that Kris won round one!

Round Two

Change is Gonna’ Come is the song that Simon Fuller chose for Adam Lambert to sing. Looking fine in a grey suit, white shirt and blue tie, Adam absolutely belts out the song with all of the appropriate emotion for the tune. Randy says he can sing his face off! Kara says it was a perfect combination of both sides of himself! Paula is virtually overcome, saying that she knows with every fiber of her being that he will be iconic! Simon says he’s 100% back in the game!

Simon Fuller has chosen What’s Goin’ On for Kris Allen to perform. Accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, Kris gets right into the song and seems very natural – it’s a great fit for his style! Randy says we’ve got a real live duel going on – but it was a little light for this point in the competition. Kara says she likes that he’s been true to himself since the beginning! Paula says he tore that song up and made Marvin Gaye proud. Simon says he liked the song, but it was like three friends sitting in their bedroom strumming along – too laid back for tonight! Simon declares that Adam won round two – one million percent!

Round Three

Ryan Seacrest sits with the ousted Idol hopefuls to hear Adam sing the new signature song, which might become his first single, No Boundaries. It sounds strangely off-kilter at times, and is overall not a great song in and of itself – quite cheesy lyrics! Randy says it was just okay for him – a little pitchy in spots. Kara is gratified to hear him sing a song she co-wrote. Paula compliments him without really commenting on the performance. Simon gets on the same bandwagon, opting not to judge the song, but also gushing about Adam’s star potential.

Kris Allen is up next, singing No Boundaries as well. He does the best he can with it, but it’s a truly awful song. Kris’s version is an improvement on Adam’s, if only because he’s less pitchy. Randy says he’s an amazing competitor – the song fit his voice better than Adam’s. Kara doesn’t want him to be judged on that song, but on the fact that he’s an incredible artist! Paula tells Kris to stand up there and take it in – he deserves to be where he is right now. Simon says it’s incredible to see him come so far – he thoroughly has deserved to be standing on that stage right now.

Ryan amps up the drama, saying tomorrow night will be a two-hour finale which is scheduled to go long. The Black Eyed Peas will be performing – don’t miss it! Tonight’s show closes with Carrie Underwood singing Home Sweet Home!
