Tonight on part 2 of the Top Chef Masterschampionship round, the remaining fivechefs will be presented with an all-American challenge: create a gourmet burger. However, things will become more difficult when actress/singer Zooey Deschanel asks them to create a meal for her andtwenty friends. The chefs must come up with a five course meal that is not onlyVegan butgluten and soy free. Well, what the crap are they supposed to make then? Keep readingto find out what happened…
The chefs walk into the kitchen, where Kelly gives them their Quickfire Challenge. The theme is “all about burgers.” Coincidentally, Hubert sells the best burger in the world at his restaurant, which costs $5,000. What the crap? In walks Spike Mendelson, Sang Yong, and Morgan Spurlock (of Supersize Me) who will serve as guest judges. The chefs are given one hour to create a gourmet burger and side dish.
Basically, all the chefs are focused on is beating Hubert, considering he has a significant advantage. First up is Rick’s dish and he serves a queso fundido burger with guacamole. Next up is Art’s cornmeal hoecake burger with fried green tomatillos. Third is Michael’s “hamburgese enorme,” which looks friggen delicious. Anita did a creative take on the idea and made a cheeseburger soup with a ketchup crouton and some other ridiculous thing that they didn’t care for. The man to beat, Hubert, creates a beef and roquefort cheeseburger with carmelized onions and rustic potatoes. Michael and Rick tie with 4 stars.
Now Kelly tells the chefs they will be creating a meal for Zooey Deschanel and her twenty friends. She tells them that she is Vegan, gluten intolerant, and doesn’t eat soy. The chefs decide among themselves who will do what courses. Art is just beside himself since his specialty is pasta, fried food, and everything that is wrong in the world. He opts to do dessert since that is the only thing he can come up with an idea for. Zooey comes in and greets the chefs before dinner and apologizes for being so difficult.
Difficult? I cannot even think of one thing I could cook under her dietary restrictions. All the guests are seated and Hubert delivers his appetizer dish of white gazpacho with grapes, followed by a timbale of avocado and asparagus with roasted beet salad. Next, Anita serves a spicy grilled eggplant with lentil salad. The guests thought it was a bit over seasoned.
Michael brings out a quinoa pasta with salsa verde and gremolata, surrounded by heirloom tomatoes. I am not sure what any of that is, but I’ll tell you that it looked good. Rick cooks up corn tamales with chili braised beans, greens, and mushrooms. Finally, Art brings out their dessert of strawberry champagne soup, strawberry rice ice cream, and almond brittle.
During their judging, Anita receives criticism for the oiliness of her eggplant and the fact that she used only one color. They feel Rick’s salad got lost in his dish, and they thought Art made a poor choice by buying pre-made Rice milk ice cream. Of course, they loved Hubert’s appetizers in both taste and presentation. The judges were overjoyed with the tastiness of Michael’s pasta, and they also loved Rick’s tamales. They didn’t feel that there was much cooking or creativity involved in Art’s dessert.
Hubert and Rick are given a total of 19 stars, and Michael wins with 22 stars. It’s down to Anita vs. Art in the bottom two. Anita scores a total of 13 stars, but Art only gets 12.5 stars. Bye Bye Art.
