So You Think You Can Dance: Interview With Winner Jeanine Mason
August 11, 2009 09:00 AM by Britteny Elrick

Last week, Jeanine Mason was crowned the winner of So You Think You Can Danceseason five! Aftera grueling audition process followed by weekly group and solodance competitions, America has finally chosen a winner. Keep reading to see what Jeanine had to tell reporters about her exiting triumph and much more…
Question: I was trying to read your facial expression right before Cat read the results. It almost looked like you were expecting her to say Brandon’s name, but I was just wondering what you were thinking right before she said who the winner was.
J.Mason:I tried to, before we got out there, to stay positive and convince myself that it was a possibility, but once you’re standing there and that ominous, horrible music plays that will always haunt me, I literally was just, I just didn’t think it could happen. Brandon is such an amazing dancer, he is such a powerful and beautiful dancer and I admire him so much that I definitely thought he had it. So I was just ready to give him a hug and to step back and let him have his moment. So hearing Cat say my name was so surreal, it was amazing.
Question:What did you do last night after you won?
J. Mason:After that we had the wrap party with all the cast, production, all the dancers and choreographers. We had an incredible party and we obviously did a whole lot of dancing. Then I went home and tried – I met with my family again – and I went home and I tried to sleep, but it didn’t really work so I ended up talking up talking to my friends who were all awake in Miami, even though the time difference they were still up. I think I slept like three hours, if I’m lucky, and I was up doing more interviews this morning. I’m still okay though; it’s still enough excitement to hold me up.
Question: So the one question I have to you is what is your advice to the next generation of dancers, to the younger kids?
J.Mason:It would definitely be never to give up. I doubted myself way too many times and I doubted myself when I first started dancing and I wasn’t a promising dancer, so I thought I couldn’t do it and my mom was the one that told me, “You’re going to do it.” Then I doubted myself when the auditions rolled around and I didn’t want to audition for the show, I thought I couldn’t do it and I was embarrassed to fall apart on national television. My family again told me, “No, you just give it a chance, just go for it.” And, because they did that I’m here right now. So I need to stop doubting myself and it took this for me to realize that but I will never doubt myself again and I just hope people realize that, that it’s so worth taking a chance. If I wouldn’t have gone for that first audition, I would just be at home right now getting ready to go to college.
Question:I wanted to know, how sore is your body after doing all those dances this week, and did you say you were battling an injury?
J.Mason:I’m lucky, I’m one of the few dancers that didn’t have any tear or broken bone or sprain this season, but I did have a lot of bruises and cuts. I’m a little bit clumsy, a little bit. So I tend to fall a lot and I actually have a really big scar on my right shin because that , group dance, which was the clown piece we did in a box with Ty Fiorio, I walked the rim of the box in the beginning of the dance and I missed a step and tripped and cut my shin on the box. So, I’m nursing that right now. I had my calf … up this week trying not to get the gash infected, but it’s closing up nicely. That was the only big issue; other than that, it’s just soreness.
Another thing is you’re dancing for six hours straight and you have lunch for half an hour, so you sit down and you just try to breathe; and as soon as you stand up, you’re cramping everywhere and you have to start moving again. It was definitely the hardest week and it was the ninth week. It was nearly impossible to constantly have a positive face on and a positive disposition because you were just in so much pain, but it helps having Evan, Randi and Taylor there because they’re just so amazing. And we would just cover when one of us was down, literally.
