Dancing With The Stars 09/28/09: The Men And The Women Go Head To Head
September 28, 2009 07:26 PM by Paulene Hinds

Tonight, on the second week of Dancing With The Stars, the men and the women go head to head and dance on the same evening. With only four days to prepare their routines and a special guest judge tonight, who is going to come out on top?

The guest judge this evening, in Len’s position, was Baz Luhrmann, the producer of Strictly Ballroom and Moulin Rouge. He was hoping to see the joy in the competitor’s performance this week. The first dancers tonight were Joanna and Derek dancing the Jive. He felt it was the perfect dance for Joanna as it was fast and had a lot of kicks and flicks in it. Their chemistry was evident as they danced tonight, but her hair extensions were very distracting to me. Carrie Ann commented on the hair as well and thought that they had gusto, but spastic feet. Bruno said he can see Joanna thriving, but the problem was that she had to keep it clean. Baz said that he wanted to see an actual connection between the two dancers. Their scores tonight were 6, 7, and 7 a solid 20.
Next up was Natalie and Alec dancing a Quickstep. This dance is fast and athletic and Natalie kept forgetting to breath while she danced during practice, on the dance floor however, she looked elegant and her breathing came as she relaxed. Bruno said that she was a part of an incredible buzz tonight and she needed to relax more and breath. Baz commeted that the Quickstep is such a difficult dance and when she was in the moment she lit up the room. Carrie Ann told Natalie that so far she is her favorite and to think of Alec as an extension of herself. They received triple 7′s a 21 tonight.
Chuck and Anna hit the floor next hoping to shine in a Tango tonight. This dance was good for him as Chuck didn’t have to smile, but his steps were still not on. It was a good thing Len wasn’t there as the shirt came off at the end. Baz thought that he looked strong and had an ability to face fear. Carrie Ann said that she was a little frightened and the dance had impact. Bruno said Chuck was savage and prime-evil and he worked very, very hard even though it wasn’t perfect. The judges gave them scores of 6, 7 and 6 a score of 19.

Melissa and Mark were dancing a Quickstep tonight and Mark was pushing her to the limit. She was ready to go out and have fun and nail the dance tonight which she did! Mark brought the Lucille Ball out of her for sure and they had an awesome time performing. Carrie Ann said she was so happy and said that it was working and Bruno said that she was like a flittering lady bug, but she has to learn to balance her bottom and her top. Baz said it was a big improvement from last week, but her steps were still a little off. With Baz’s score of 6 they still received another 7 and 6, a total of 19 for this evening which received a big boo from the audience!
Michael and Anna wanted to score another touchdown this week and they were practicing right into the early mornings to attack this Quickstep. It seemed like a slow Quickstep and the choreography wasn’t that great, but Michael seemed to tackle it. Bruno said that they wanted content and he gave it and had improved. Baz said that he could see that Michael confronted the challenge and Carrie Ann said that compared to last week it was much better. Tonight the judges gave them scores of 7, 7 and 6 a 20.
Debi and Maks were going to dance a Tango tonight and their love hate relationship was coming through as they practiced. Once he apologized and she smacked him, everything clicked. Wowza…heat! Baz said he loved the song and the love hate relationship was an achievement. Carrie Ann said that she was a drama queen and her hold and form and posture was gorgeous. Bruno said that he loved it when she was channeling the ball breaker Maks and could be even better if she stayed focused! Their scores were triple 7′s a 21.

Next the champion of the slopes, Louie, dived into a Jive with his partner Chelsie. Their dance was energetic and cute. Carrie Ann said that what is so great about Louie is that he is so loveable to watch. Bruno called Louie the “cool dude in the hood,” but wants to see more dance steps from him. Baz thought that he has so much joy, but the jacket kind of worked against him a bit. The judges gave them 6, 7 and 6 a score of 19. There were a lot of 19′s going on tonight.
Aaron and Karina came out to perform a Quickstep. Aaron was feeling lots of pressure to stay on top and Karina was pushing him as hard as Maks was pushing Debi. Maybe there is some sexual frustration going on? They danced to The Muppet Show theme even having muppets play instruments in their song! At the end Gonzo trumpeted in Bruno’s ear! Bruno said it was spectacular, calling him the mini Fred Astaire. Baz said that was great to see Aaron growing like that. Carrie Ann commented that Aaron and her were dressed alike tonight. She thought they had great pizazz and showmanship along with awesome steps! Okay they better do well tonight! They received scores of 9,9 and9 triple 9′s for 27!
Last week this next star impressed the judges and tonight Kelly and Louis were dancing a Tango. She was worried that she wouldn’t be as good as last week and was stressing herself and Louis out. Their Tango was fantastic, but something happened at the end. Baz said that her story was such a self revelation coming through what she was doing and he was moved by her dance even thought there were mistakes. Carrie Ann said that she is building a fantastic technique baseline and had to stay in character. Bruno said that it was a shame that she broke character when she made mistakes, but she could be amazing! They received scores of 6, 7, 6 a score of 19!

Kathy and Tony were dancing a Quickstep tonight and they looked enchanting on the dance floor even with the few stumbles from Kathy. Carrie Ann said that this dance suited her better this week, but she is still too reserved and needs to stand out. Bruno said that Kathy is elegant and beautiful to look at but has to be engaging and they have to dance closer together. Baz said that he found a lack of excitement in their dance. They received triple 6′s an 18 which is one of the lowest scores of the night.
Mark and Lacey were hoping to stay in the top four with their Quickstep tonight. They moved up if you ask me and he definately is the King of Swing. Bruno commented that he is a great performer, but if he could get his footwork under control he would be even better. Baz thought that he did well even though he stumbled and Carrie Ann thought that he is very tight and clean when he dances, but unfortunately he did slip. Tonight after only four days of dancing they received a score of 7, 7 and 7 which is 21.
Mya and Dmitry hit the floor with their Quickstep and it was fantastic…even Baz said so. Carrie Ann said that even though Len wouldn’t have liked the dance, she loved it and Bruno thought that it was magnificent..doing it like he had never seen done before! They received triple 9′s another 27 to match Aaron tonight! There is now a two way tie for the lead tonight.

Tom and Cheryl were dancing the Tango and Cheryl felt that he was struggling with his toes. He had a stress fracture, but he was still going to dance tonight. Â It was great except for the fact that he just about dropped her at the end. Carrie Ann said that there is something alluring about watching them dance. Bruno said that the routine was distinguished and determined. Baz said even with the cliffhanger ending, he had great dignity and grace. They received triple 6′s an 18…boo!
Donny and Kym were dancing the Jive tonight and I was so excited! They got a standing ovation from the crowd too! Bruno said the mission was accomplished and he played it just right. Baz thought that the dance was fantastic and he was so full of life and joy. Carrie Ann said that this is why the name Osmond carries so much weight in show business and they were fantastic! They received a 9, 8 and a 9 a 25!
