Chris Daughtry recently embarked on a nearly three month American tour after the release of his second album, Leave This Town. PEOPLE caught up with the former American Idol finalist to talk about life on the road and how he manages to keep his wife happy while he’s away…
Chris told PEOPLE that when it comes to his wife he doesn’t sweat the small stuff. “My wife, if she wants it, she will just go out and buy it,” he said. “I have learned that – I have been married almost nine years now – and if she wants something she will definitely [get it]. The last thing I bought her was a really awesome diamond ring that should probably keep me out of trouble for the rest of my life.”
He continued on by saying he and his band members never forget to give credit to their biggest fans. “They support us. They are the heroes,” Chris said of their wives back home. “They are holding everything down at home while we are out here. We are ‘working,’ quote-unquote. It’s something that we absolutely love. Even getting up at 5 in the morning doesn’t feel like a job. Luckily, our wives wanted this for us as bad if not worse than we did. It’s not like a big guilt-trip thing going on, which would make it more difficult.”
While on the road, Chris said it can be quite difficult if the loneliness sets in, so he tries to keep as busy as possible. “We send pictures back and forth to the kids. That’s the hard thing. No matter how old they are, you miss a lot of things. If there is something going on, I will tell my wife to take a picture of it and e-mail or text it to me. It is what it is. We make do.”
