It came as quite a shock when Mia Michaels announced that she was leaving So You Think You Can Dance. Her fellow cast members have recently voiced their sadness over the news. Now Mia is finally speaking out about the reasons behind her departure…
Mia told PEOPLE magazine that the amount of time she was spending on the show didn’t leave her sufficient time to work on her other projects. “It’s been an amazing five-year journey and I am in a place where I have all these great opportunities that have been presented to me and I am ready to take on all these challenges,” Mia said.
“So when I was working on the show, I wasn’t able to really focus on anything else. Now I’m really focusing on these other projects that I can’t pass up. I think that’s pretty much the main reason why I left the show.”
Although she has left the cast, Mia is still involved in international versions of the show. She continued, “It was just a decision that I made. It’s just something that I needed to do. I’ve been doing this for a long time and this is just another step in my journey to now take it to the next level.”
“In order for me to move forward in my career, sometimes we have to let go before other things can take off. Am I sad? There’s moments, of course, but I’m also doing these other shows that I still get my fix on So You Think You Can Dance because I’m still choreographing, I’m still judging, I’m still seeing [Nigel Lythgoe]. So it’s all a very positive thing.”
Mia also commented that she began to feel less inspired and more like a machine who was expected to churn out a new dance piece each week. “Then you start wondering, ‘Where is the inspiration for real? Is it inspiration or is that you’ve got to deliver, so you just have to turn it on and do it,’” she told People. “Now I find myself actually more inspired and more excited about creating. I feel like this time is so crucial for me to take that next step in my life.”
