Tonight on the Dancing With The Stars season finale, the stars had one last dance and one last chance, in the most jammed packed finale ever. Who won it all and took home the mirror ball trophy?
The final three were announced by hosts Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris and all 16 stars were back for one last performance this evening. A recap was shown of the dances last night and what the judges had to say about each performer. As the show was underway, all of a sudden there was a glitch and it froze mid scene. Tom Bergeron mentioned that the show was live and would return after the break!
After the break, the show continued and Whitney Housten took the stage singing Million Dollar Bill from her seventh and most recent studio album, I Look to You, released in August 2009. She still has it and I hope her career grows again and she can stay clean.
Next, Jeffrey Ross talked about the Loser’s club and the first person who is voted off of the show first. He said the only thing more renowned than this club is the winner’s club and then inducted Ashley Hamilton. The show then went back and relived the magic of season 9 and all of the contestants best and worst dances.
Next with a brand new dance, the season 9 contestants came out and hit the floor for one last performance. If only they could have danced like that during the competition, they may still be in it tonight! Tom Delaney returned to do the Texas two step with Cheryl Burke. He had to withdraw from the competition because he had stress fractures in both of his feet.
The competition continued as the three finalists performed their favorite dance of the season and were ranked by the judges. Kelly and Louis danced the Viennese Waltz. Bruno said that she may have come from rock and roll royalty but she had become a ballroom princess and Carrie Ann said that Kelly has touched her more than anyone ever on the show. Len said that her growth has been spectacular.
Mya and Dmitry then danced their Jive from this season. Bruno started by saying, Mya the magnificent, you have it all! Carrie Ann said that Mya set the pace and everyone was trying to catch up to her. Len said that he never doubted her dance talent and she is fantastic.
The final dancer tonight from the top three was Donny and his partner Kym. They danced the Argentine Tango. Carrie Ann said that Donny graced them and loved every performance they ever did. Len said that Donny travelled a rocky path, but he never lost his 100% performing. Bruno said that Donny was the great performer.
The rankings for the final dances tonight were 26 points Kelly and Louis, 28 points Mya and Dmitry and 30 points Donny and Kym.
Season 2 competitor NHL hall of famer Jerry Rice and this season’s NHL hall of famer Michael Irvin took their good natured rivalry to the dance floor for a dance-off. Len thought that Michael was the winner on the dance floor, but the battle of the bodies went to Jerry, so there were no losers here tonight and they both walked away with a mirror ball ring!
The Muppets, who were featured earlier this season in Aaron Carter and Karina Smirnoff’s week two quick step, returned making an appearance tonight. Miss Piggy hasn’t changed any over the years and is still a Diva and I loved Cloris Leachman’s joke about the swine flu!
Next, Cloris Leachman, Steve Wozniak, Jerry Springer and Joanna Krupa danced in the wildest competition Mambo you have ever seen. The winners were Joanna and Derek which appeared to be a set up by ABC!
Whitney Houston then returned with a fantastic second performance, singing her chart topping hit single, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, from her second studio album, Whitney, released in 1987. The album became the first by a female artist ever to debut at number one in the Billboard 200, and produced a then-record equaling four number one singles from one album. Accompanying her were the Dancing With The Stars professional dancers Mark Ballas, Cheryl Burke, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Tony Dovolani, Chelsie Hightower, Alec Mazo, Jonathan Roberts, Lacey Schwimmer, Edyta Sliwinska and Anna Trebunskaya.
All the excitement and frenzy led up to the moment we’ve all been waiting for…who among the three finalists reigned as champion of Dancing With The Stars and took home the coveted mirror ball trophy? It was none other than Donny and Kym with Mya and Dmitry in second and Kelly and Louis in third.
