Earlier today, Richard and Mayumi Heene, the parents who orchestrated the balloon boy hoax, were sentenced to prison. Richard received 90 days in jail whereas his wife was given only 20 days, but both are on four years of probation. Keep reading for more details…
As reported by ABC news, the couple also received about 200 combined hours of community service and are prohibited from profiting from the hoax until their probation is up.
After causing nation-wide concern and wasting the time of rescue workers, Richard did apologize for what the couple did. “I do want to reiterate that I’m very, very sorry,” he said. “And I want to apologize to all the rescue workers out there and the people that got involved in the community. That’s it.”
Speaking of wasting man power, that was one of the arguments brought against the Heenes today in court. District attorney Andrew Lewis said, “Mr. Heene wasted a lot of man power and a lot of money in wanting to get himself some publicity,” and said the court should make an example of him.
