Biggest Loser: Sherry And Ashley Johnston Discuss Their Motivation To Do The Show

December 31, 2009 09:00 AM by Britteny Elrick

Mother and daughter team, Sherry and Ashley Johnston, spoke with Entertainment Tonight about how a family tragedy gave them the motivation they needed to compete on The Biggest Loser. Keep reading to hear more about their touching story…

After Sherry, 51, and daughter Ashley, 27, lost Sherry’s husband to cancer, both the girls sought comfort in food. “When Ken died, he was the love of my life,” Sherry told ET. “We were married for 18 years. When he died of melanoma cancer, it was devastating. He fought so hard. He was the rock that held us together. I went off the radar. I didn’t go out of the house for four months. I fell out of life. [Ashley and I] have worked really hard to getting back to wanting to live again. One of the things I do now is a grief ministry because I know how far off it can go.”

“My goal is 130,” Ashley said, who weighed in at 374 when she started the show. “That is 244 pounds to lose. But it is totally do-able. Especially when you are here and focusing on yourself. You don’t have temptations outside of this place. At home, I am going to have to kick it, too.”

The Biggest Loser premieres on Tuesday, January 5 at 8 p.m. on NBC.
