If you are an American Idol fan, then you have undoubtedly heard of General Larry Platt aka the “Pants on the Ground” man.  This immediate internet sensation was the last singer to “try out” during the Atlanta auditions on the second night of  American Idol this week.  It was clear by looking at him that he was not a real contender because he far surpassed the age limit the show has set of 28, but he was by far the best audition we have seen so far.

Not since William Hung (was that his name?) back in the early days of American Idol has there been a contestant who auditioned that caused so much chatter amongst fans.  Especially when that contestant did not make it on the show.  General Larry Platt’s creative genius showed when he taught the judges a new song which he wrote that put in their place every kid, man and woman that thinks it is cool to wear pants where the belt sits at their thighs.  Not only were the judges singing along by the end of it, but so was America.

Where did he come from though?  He isn’t just someone looking for his 15 minutes of fame.  To be honest General Larry Platt has had many 15 minutes of fame in his life.  He was a student under Martin Luther King Jr and was a huge leader in the cruisade for civil rights in the 60′s.  In 2001, GA declared September 4, 2001, Larry Platt day because of his “priceless and immeasurable contributions to society” and “his great energy and commitment to equality and the protection of the innocent and for his outstanding service to the Atlanta community and the citizens of Georgia.”  They pointed him out saying, “For the past 40 years, Larry Platt has given of himself in service to the people of the City of Atlanta, the State of Georgia, and the nation…Larry Platt merits the highest recognition for his many valuable contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and his dedication to the struggle for equality and human rights.”

While we are sure that there are many people in Atlanta that will always know and remember all the great things Larry Platt has done for them and the south, and the things he continues to do, his nationwide fame will now be more known for his song, “Pants on the Ground”.  We doubt he minds.
