Neil Patrick Harris is the guest judge for FOX’s Dallas auditions tonight on American Idol 9! Neil is ready to shatter the dreams of thousands! He joins host Ryan Seacrest, Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi, and Randy Jackson as the hopefuls stream in for the first day of auditions. Joe Jonas is the guest judge for day two. Read on for highlights!
A very sparkly girl, Julie Kevelighan, is one of the first in front of the Idol panel. Neil tells her that her song was not good – not strong. Simon says the outfit, everything, was wrong. This causes Julie to launch into Over the Rainbow. The judges groan, and the security guards see some action as they escort her back out to Ryan.
Lloyd ‘Big Sucsexy’ Thomas is one of the next big offerings from Dallas. He sings Overjoyed by Stevie Wonder, and sounds fantastic. Kara marvels that he is a dockworker with that voice! Simon tells him he’s his favorite of the day. Randy gives him one million percent ‘yes’ – all agree – he’s through to Hollywood!
Kimberly Carver is up in front of the judges. She snaps her fingers and sings her tune. Randy and Neil love it, but Simon isn’t interested – there’s nothing current about her. Simon sticks to his ‘no’, but the remaining three judges give her a golden ticket!
Dexter Ward claims the show is over – he’s the next ‘America’s’ Idol. The effeminate young man sings a cringe-worthy version of some song that cannot be deciphered. Randy tells him singing is not his thing – all the judges give him ‘no’s. Dexter dissolves in tears after he leaves the room.
A graduate student from Texas, Erica Rhodes, is a Barney & Friends kid from way back! She comes in wearing black pleather and carrying a whip – and sings the I Love You song from Barney! Her real song is full of attitude and involves cracking the whip for effect! Simon asks her what the dream is – she says she wants people to know that Barney kids grow up. Neil adds, “To be dirty girls!” Joking aside, the judges thinks she’ll do well – they put her through to Hollywood!
Dave Pitman, and 27 year-old from Arkansas, who has Tourette’s Syndrome, is the next contestant. He notes that by some miracle, the disorder doesn’t affect him when he’s singing. Bring It On Home To Me is his song. All the judges think he has a great voice, and are amazed that the Tourette’s doesn’t affect his singing – they welcome him to Hollywood! 14 others make it through by the end of Day one.
Todrick Hall is a fabulous sounding hopeful up early on the second day. He has an original song too! Randy says he’s one of the best auditions he’s seen for season 9. Simon remarks that he’s not jumping out of his chair voice-wise, but nevertheless, he gets a ‘yes’ from all four of them – including Joe Jonas, who is the guest judge for the day.
Maegan Wright is a Texas native who has her little brother along to cheer her efforts! She pleasantly surprises the judges with her beautiful voice. Kara’s not wild about her casual outfit, but Simon thinks she seems comfortable. All four judges put her through to Hollywood – her little brother Dawson is ecstatic!
The next girl is clad in bright pink spandex and yells a song at the judges. Simon remarks that if anyone asks him what his nightmares are like – he’ll refer to that! Vanessa keeps her upbeat attitude somehow, as she heads outside.
The last contestant of the Dallas auditions is Christian Spear , who was diagnosed with leukemia at a young age and battled back – she’s been in remission since age 8 – she’s currently 16. Christian sings an Etta James song, and the judges are suitably impressed at her bravery and her voice. Randy gives her a billion percent yes, and the others concur – she gets the golden ticket! 16 others get through for the day.
American Idol heads on to Denver, Colorado to continue the search!
