Kitchen Nightmares: Hot Potato Cafe

January 30, 2010 03:54 PM by Lisa Princ

Gordon Ramsay is back tonight for a brand new season of Kitchen Nightmares on FOX. Tonight he travels to Philadelphia to put some life back into the Hot Potato Cafe after being called a “spuddy hell” by a local food critic. So what exactly pushes Gordon Ramsay over the edge to the point of walking out? Guess you’ll have to keep reading to find out!

Tonight on the season premiere of Kitchen Nightmares on FOX, Chef Gordon Ramsay travels to Philadelphia, PA to help out the family owned and operated Hot Potato Cafe. Owned by 3 sisters, with their 21 year old niece, Danielle running the kitchen this spud’s cafe has been deemed “spuddy hell” by a local food critic. Determined to get their restaurant back on track, these gals are hoping Gordon Ramsay is the key to just that!

As he sits down to get the low down on the restaurant, it becomes clear to Gordon Ramsay that there is no passion left in any of them nor is there much family love left in this family business. As he desperately tries to get to answers out of these ladies, no one is willing to give the real reasons why the business is failing, so Gordon Ramsay decides to walk out of the Hot Potato Cafe as he knows he cannot help them unless they are honest with him. As he gets a few blocks down, the sisters go after him, determined to get his help and their restaurant back. They then come clean with Gordon Ramsay of Kitchen Nightmares on FOX and he in turn decides to stick around, lucky for them.

Determined to find out why this place was named “spuddy hell”, Gordon Ramsay soon learns one of the reasons…they are using 3 week old frozen potatoes instead of fresh ones in their signature potato dishes. After letting them know this is unacceptable, he decides to let the three sisters as well the chef, Danielle try to come up with a good potato to use on their new menu. They each created one, and low and behold, Danielle’s was by far the best one proving that unbeknownst to her she did in fact have the drive it took to be a chef and keep creating new dishes.

Next up on Kitchen Nightmares on FOX, it was time for Gordon Ramsay to tackle portion sizes. This place was throwing away so much food as their portions were huge, and we watched almost every diner take home a doggy bag.Gordon Ramsay took a customer’s leftovers, and showed the ladies how it fit on a normal size dining plate, YIKES! He then showed exactly how much food was going home with diners, thus leading to all the money they were throwing out the window…I think he proved his point very well.

Finally, Gordon Ramsay did a complete revamp of the restaurant itself, including the creation of a new menu. He also had a surprise for Danielle as he had hired a mentor to help her for a month because he could see the chef’s twinkle in her eye and knew she had it in her, she just needed a little help. It was not until the re-opening of Hot Potato Cafe that Gordon Ramsay let the staff know that the food critic who wrote the horrible review on them would be back for dinner tonight.

Nervous about the return of the food critic on Kitchen Nightmares on FOX, the Hot Potato Cafe staff pulled it together and at Gordon Ramsay’s urging, they did not overdo it or let the food critic know they were trying to impress him. The tactic worked, because he as well as all the other diners in there, were happy with every dish that served and  he even gave them a new, much improved review.

Another successful save for Gordon Ramsay on Kitchen Nightmares on FOX.

Be sure to tune in next friday at 9 pm EST for a brand new episode of Kitchen Nightmares on FOX.
