In order to win the title of Shear Geniusand the top prize of $100,000, a spread in Allure Magazine, and an Apprenticeship at Nexxus, the twelve must make it through a series of challenges.
Camila introduces Judge Jonathan Antin, from the series Blow Out, and he informs the contestants that they are having their first challenge. They are to style the hair of twelve women who come walking in with things ranging from multi colored hair to dread locks. They have two hours to give these women a more polished look.
As the clock winds down, Jonathan critiques all of the styles which were overall good. He pointed out that many were unfinished, but they did a good job, but only one could win the challenge. He declares Amy the winner of the challenge, as she took her client from a pile of dreadlocks to a short polished bob.
Next Camila tells them that they are having an elimination challenge, and they have to create hairstyles to cover the breasts of models that will only be wearing bikini bottoms on a runway. After their two hour time limit is up, the judges Antin, colorist Kim Vo, and swimsuit creator Monica Wise critique the looks from a bikini made out of hair braids to a barely covered nipple. After a quick deliberation, they choose Joey as the eliminated contestant for his flamboyant, beachy look that was too busy for the eye in a bright orange color.
The winner of the challenge, Janine, received immunity from the next elimination challenge.
This has set the tone for the future challenges which told the stylists that you never know who will make it, and who will be a shear failure.
Who will make it through to the next round, and who’s dream of becoming a Shear Genius be cut short?
