An impressive amount of viewers tuned in to American Idol this week to witness new judge, Ellen Degeneres‘ first week on the panel alongside Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Kara DioGuardi. The comedienne and talk show host took her place behind the judges table for the first time during Hollywood Week. So how did she do? Former American Idol contestants from seasons past weigh in on her performance…
Ellen Degeneres‘ first week as an American Idol judge brought in lots of viewers but mixed reviews. Some people loved it while others hated it. Fellow judge Kara DioGuardi sang the comedienne’s praises earlier this week but she’s not the only one coming to Ellen’s defense. We got feedback from some people who know all about what it feels like to be judged: previous Idol hopefuls. Here’s what some former American Idol contestants had to say about the new judge’s first week on the job:
Season 5 runner-up Mandisa and Season 3′s Kimberly Locke both gave Ellen an ‘A!’ Mandisa said, “I knew Ellen would bring much needed comedic relief in a very high pressure situation, but I was pleasantly surprised that her critiques were also constructive and helpful.” Locke echoed the sentiment saying, “Her love for the show really shined through — she was funny and truthful! She is the perfect replacement for Paula; kind and compassionate to the contestants. It is important for the contestants to know that one of the judges will show them compassion throughout the competition.”
Constantine Maroulis from American Idol‘s fourth season said, “She killed it! Very funny and witty. I thought Ellen contributed well. She knows what it takes.” Season two hopeful Kimberly Caldwell agreed saying, “She supplied much needed comedy relief and being judged herself on stages her whole life makes her totally qualified for the job!”
So there you have it. Former Idol hopefuls seem to love what Ellen Degeneres brings to the show. What about you? How do you think she did on her first week?
