Tonight on FOX, we find out who will be the first two girls, and first two guys to leave American Idol 9. Tonight will also feature Kris Allen in an Idol Gives Back segment on Haiti, as well as a performance by Alison Iraheta from last season! Ryan Seacrest introduces Ellen Degeneres, Kara DioGuardi, Randy Jackson, and asks Simon Cowell if he believes he was harsher than usual last night – he says he was just honest – some of the performances weren’t good. Read on for highlights and results!
The show opens with the Top 24 singing American Boy together, and then the girls are in the spotlight. Ryan asks the back row to stand, then tells Siobhan she is safe, and so is Haeley. Michelle is told to sit back down – she is safe. Katelyn is also staying. Still in the back row, standing, are Katie and Janell – Ryan announces that he’s sorry to say, it’s the end of the road for Janell Wheeler – Katie is safe. Janell says her goodbyes alongside Ryan and predicts that one of the girls will win this year. She sings one last time.
Sporting a black dress, black leather knee high boots, and long hot pink hair, American Idol 8 alumni, Alison Iraheta, takes the stage to perform live. She’s awesome. Ryan speaks to her after she sings – she recalls how stressful it was backstage wondering who is going to be eliminated.
Ryan asks the front row of girls to stand up now. Paige and Lacey are safe. Lilly is asked to chill – she’s staying. Crystal takes a seat next – she too is safe. Ashleigh and Didi remain standing. Didi is safe, and Ashleigh Rodriguez is told she’s going home. She thanks everyone who has supported her since day one, and then sings her last song.
The guys are in the spotlight now. The back row stands up, and Ryan tells Big Mike that he is safe. John, Aaron, and Todrick are also safe. Tim and Joe are left standing. Tim is the one who gets to sit down – Joe Munoz is going home. Joe notes he had no expectations, then sings one last time.
Ryan says April 21 is the date for another big Idol Gives Back, and it all begins this evening by focusing on Haiti. American Idol 8 winner Kris Allen is there with Ryan to talk about recent time spent in the devastated country. Kris warns that the upcoming rainy season could be very bad for the people there, so they really need help now. Ryan Seacrest encourages viewers to donate through the American Idol website. Kris Allen take the stage to sing Let It Be as a montage of his time in Haiti plays in the background.
The front row of guys must stand now. Casey is told that viewers want more ear candy – he’s safe! Jermaine, Lee, and Andrew are also safe. Tyler and Alex are the last two standing. Simon says based on the vocals, it should be Alex who is safe – he’s right. Tyler Grady is going home. Tyler tells Ryan he feels he didn’t get much constructive criticism during Hollywood Week, and the advice they gave him last night was too late, but hindsight’s twenty-twenty. Tyler performs one more time as the show closes.
So, Janell Wheeler, Ashleigh Rodriguez, Joe Munoz, and Tyler Grady all leave American Idol 9 tonight. The remaining twenty perform again next week!
