Katharine McPhee, runner-up on season 5 of American Idol, is shifting her sights to acting. The singer, who has appeared in small roles in the film The House Bunny and TV drama CSI: NY, will be starring in a new NBC comedy titled “The Pink House.” The show centers on two Midwesterners, John “Fitz” Fitzgerald and Rob “Bernie” Burnett, who relocate to Los Angeles to live on the beach and try to land their dream jobs. The American Idol star will play Emily, a Midwestern gal struggling to fit in with the LA scene who befriends the guys.
The show’s concept was pitched to NBC by Conaco, the production company owned by late-night funny man, Conan O’Brien. While the male leads have yet to be cast, it’s been confirmed that Katharine McPhee has signed on. The American Idol runner-up will get to display her comedy acting chops this week on an new episode of NBC‘s Community where she’ll play stepdaughter to Chevy Chase and potential love interest to Joel McHale.
In January, McPhee said, ”Acting is still a huge focus for me. I still meet with my acting coach, regardless of whether I have auditions. I just want to keep growing so that when a part comes along that I’m meant to play, I’ll be prepared. It’s just a matter of time until I find the right project.” Could The Pink House be the right project for the former American Idol star? Only time will tell.
