Tonight on FOX, the show opens with laughs as the American Idol judges Ellen Degeneres and Simon Cowell pretend to canoodle in their seats! Ryan Seacrest introduces Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi, and announces that the Top Eight girls are ready to go. Read on for all of the highlights…
Katie Stevens is the first to go on. She is in a crop jacket and skinny dark pants, and sings a lukewarm version of Breakaway. Randy isn’t impressed, calling it karaoke. Ellen didn’t see personality, although she thought it was a good song choice. Kara thinks Katie is one of the people who doesn’t know who she is yet as an artist. Simon also thinks she doesn’t know what type of artist she is, but gives her ten out of ten for effort because she took their advice.
Siobhan Magnus will be singing House of the Rising Sun tonight in honor of her dad. Once again wearing a flower in her hair, along with a vivid red dress, she does a hauntingly beautiful rendition of the tune. Randy likes that every week she surprises them, taking risks and chances – it’s hot! Ellen tells her that she is why she loves music – it’s supposed to move you – she’s spectacular! Kara loves her choices, and she really liked it tonight. Simon disagrees with the other judges – he was under-impressed compared to last week.
Lacey Brown takes the spotlight next in leopard print. She is sings while perched on the edge of the stage – it’s a slow, sweet song. Randy admits it was a little boring, but says it was the best he has heard for her in awhile! Ellen agrees – really good. Kara says performances like this is why she got there – it was a brilliant choice. Simon didn’t love the song, but she sang it really well.
Singing I Feel the Earth Move, Katelyn Epperley takes the stage accompanying herself on the keyboard. It’s a pretty uninspired version of the tune, but technically it’s good. Randy didn’t feel any connection between her and the song – it was sleepy. Ellen agrees that it wasn’t enough. Kara didn’t feel she was competing tonight. Simon tells Katelyn he likes her hair, but her song was like request night in a restaurant – he thinks it may have been a mistake for her tonight.
Didi Benami is accompanying herself on guitar and wearing a pink frock and knee high black boots to sing Rhiannon. She does a good job. Randy says it was a lot better. Ellen thinks it was a lovely performance. Kara and Simon agree that it was the best they’ve heard all night. Simon adds that the whole performance was a ‘wow’ moment!
Paige Miles opts to sing Smile, which is also a very subdued arrangement. Randy tells her it just didn’t work – it was too big for her. Ellen says it was sad and heavy instead of uplifting like the lyrics. Kara agrees – it was all wrong, and asks Paige if she realized it was wrong. Paige says she loves the song and is sorry it didn’t work. Simon agrees with the others, saying it was a terrible arrangement, and calling it a peanut performance. He feels it’s a shame because she has a beautiful voice.
Doing Tracy Chapman’s Give Me One Reason, is Crystal Bowersox, accompanying herself on electric guitar. She infuses the tune with plenty of bluesy intensity – it’s a hit with the crowd! Randy tells her this is what the show is about for him – loved it! Ellen calls it the best performance of the night! Kara says it’s easy for her because she steps up there and knows what she’s doing – she can imagine the record she’ll make! Simon is one billion percent certain she’ll make the Top Twelve, and says the competition is hers to lose!
Lilly Scott takes the stage last to do I Fall To Pieces by Patsy Cline and close the show. In a little denim dress, and playing a mandolin, she delivers a really neat sounding version of the tune. Randy thinks she’s in the zone – loved it! Ellen agrees – loved it, loved her! Kara laughs that she made Patsy Cline feel contemporary. Simon liked it – he says it was brave, cute, and quirky, but it didn’t have the ‘wow’ moment suitable for the last slot of the night.
Tomorrow night on American Idol 9 the Top Eight guys perform!
