Fans of The Bachelorette‘s spunky star Jillian Harris will be delighted tonight to see her working in her element as an interior designer when she appears on an episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Harris is teaming up with Ty Pennington and the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition crew in Slaughterville, Oklahoma to build a new home for the Skaggs family. Harris chats about her excited reaction to the offer to work on the show, the challenges of designing a bedroom for a five-year-old girl, and whether or not fans can expect to see her on future episodes of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition…
As if dating 25 gorgeous men on national television as ABC‘s The Bachelorette wasn’t enough, Jillian Harris has landed another dream reality TV gig: working as a designer on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Viewers will have the opportunity to see the restaurant designer in her own element as she takes on the challenge of decorating a bedroom for five-year-old, Merit Skaggs. On tonight’s episode, Ty Pennington and the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition gang build a new home for the Skaggs family, whose son Jhett underwent a heart transplant procedure at 10 months old. The opportunity is a dream come true for The Bachelorette‘s Jillian Harris.
According to Harris, she always thought, “If I am ever going to be on TV, what I really want to be is a designer on ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.’ But it is not easy to get your foot in the door.” After appearing on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, Harris got her opportunity. “In August, I got a call asking me if I wanted to do a guest appearance as a designer on the show. I flipped out, put the phone on mute and screamed and jumped up and down and was crying. It is funny how things work out,” she says.
On tonight’s episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Harris’ main responsibility is designing a room for Jhett’s five-year old sister, Merit. “Merit’s room I did on my own. As a restaurant designer, I think my designs are great and they need to appeal to the masses and last 30 years. I struggled with designing Merit’s room because it has to be over the top. It has to appeal to just her. It has to get just her excited. Normally, I would be designing with trendy colors and it would be very feminine and possibly something that could make it into a magazine. But on the show, you have to make it extreme,” Harris says.
Despite the chaos and fast-paced nature of the show, Harris loved every minute of her experience on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. ”The house is built in seven days. That blew me away. I love that idea of chaos. Of running around and picking up colors and making last minute decisions. The whole time I was so stressed: Is Merit going to love the room? I wanted her to walk in and her heart to melt. It was such an incredible experience,” Harris says.
Can fans expect to see Harris making future appearances on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition? “I would absolutely love to do something with ‘Extreme’ again. It changed me a little bit. It was such a positive experience,” she says.
