Fans of Jason Castro, a finalist from American Idol‘s seventh season, will be happy to know the singer is gearing up to release his first full album. The dreadlocked singer talks about his new self-titled debut, his first single All Wrapped Up, and the inspiration behind his songs…

He may not have won American Idol, but Jason Castro certainly earned the adoration of fans and the praises of the judges during his time on the FOX singing competition. Not surprisingly, he’s following in the footsteps of dozens of other Idol hopefuls and releasing a solo album. The self-titled debut will be released on April 13th, but the first single, All Wrapped Up, is available now. About the album, Castro says, “It’s a modern singer/songwriter album that’s very acoustic based, but there’s also upbeat rockin’ things that I think might surprise some fans.”

Castro recognizes that his time on American Idol made his dream of becoming a recording artist a reality. “Being on American Idol really enabled me to work on my debut album. Without AI I might still be at home dreaming of that record deal… I didn’t write any songs about AI but the experience there did help me evolve as a singer and as an artist. I am very grateful for the opportunity to have gone through the competition,” Castro says.

Regarding the songs on the album, the American Idol alum was inspired by his past experiences and his new wife, Mandy Mayhall, who he married in January. “She makes life better,” he says about his bride. While many of the songs on the new album are inspired by his wife, Castro says All Wrapped Up is a song about “being lost in somebody.”
