American Idol judges used their one and only save this week to spare Michael Lynche from being eliminated from the competition. As fans and critics wonder if the move was wise so early in the season, judge Randy Jackson defends the decision. Keep reading for more info on why Randy thought it was the right decision and why Michael deserved to stay…
It’s a new rule in recent years of American Idol: the four judges are given a get-out-of-elimination-free card that they can use to spare any contestant on the show. The save can only be used one time in the season and the following week, two contestants are given the boot. It’s only four weeks into the FOX singing competition, but the judges decided to use the power to spare contestant, Michael Lynche. When Lynche received the lowest number of votes this week, the judges deliberated and granted him the opportunity to stay in the competition.
“He sung his brains out,” Randy Jackson says. “It was the right thing to do. I’m happy we did it.†The four judges carefully considered the decision, but ultimately couldn’t let Michael Lynche go. “We get one save in the season. He was so good [Wednesday] night, and this is a singing competition. He was the best singer in the whole show,†the American Idol says.
After Tuesday’s performances, Michael Lynche received the lowest number of votes from America, but on Wednesday night he blew Randy Jackson and the other Idol judges away when he sang This Woman’s Work. The second performance is what kept him going. “We started out discussions and were saying, ‘My God, well, he’s singing amazing tonight,’ even though he’s had up and down weeks,†says Jackson. “I think he would have been safe, and I think they forgot to vote for him, thinking, ‘Ah, he’s going to be there [next week].’”
Hopefully fans will begin voting for Michael Lynche again next week or the save will have been pointless.
