Tonight on FOX, host Ryan Seacrest opens the show by reminding viewers that last week on American Idol, the judges, Simon Cowell, Ellen Degeneres, Kara Dioguardi, and Randy Jackson, unanimously decided to use the save on Michael Lynche, meaning this week two contestants must go home! The top nine will perform the songs of Elvis Presley tonight. Helping them prepare was mentor Adam Lambert from season 8 who met up with the hopefuls in Las Vegas! Read on for highlights…
Adam Lambert joins Ryan to weigh in. He feels the top nine all have great voices but he coached them to wake up a bit! When asked which Elvis song he would have chosen, Adam says Tim’s selection, Can’t Help Falling in Love.
Crystal Bowersox practiced with Adam. She asked his advice on whether she should play her acoustic or electric. He chose the electric guitar for her tune Saved! Crystal does a high-energy, gospel/blues live performance on stage. Randy tells her way to come out and open with energy – it was dope! Ellen jokes that she’s tired of telling her how great she is! Kara calls it another solid performance. Simon likes that she chose a song that suited her – it sounded great!
Andrew Garcia is up next. In practice, Adam told Andrew that his arrangement was boring. Andrew agreed to change it up. Tonight, Andrew takes the stage in a dark suit jacket and does a dialed down version of Hound Dog. Randy says it definitely wasn’t good karaoke and he didn’t get it. Ellen disagrees, saying she thought he pulled it off. Kara felt like the mic was his crutch almost – she wanted to feel more. Simon thought it was lazy and unpredictable – he really didn’t get it.
Tim Urban is set to go with Can’t Help Falling in Love. Adam commented that he had a lovely tone to his voice and he also did a great job with his guitar. Tim sits on a stool to show off his romantic side and does a great job – I’m rooted to the screen! Randy is amazed – he liked it! Ellen couldn’t help falling in love with Tim – it was beautiful. Kara calls it her favorite Tim performance – it was authentic and well done. Simon says he’s gone from zero to hero in two weeks! Congratulations!
When Lee Dewyze met with Adam Lambert in Vegas, Adam told him that he needs to perform, or at least smile and connect! Lee takes the stage to sing A Little Less Conversation while accompanying himself on acoustic. He has lots of energy this week and really works it! Randy says he’s in the zone! Ellen thinks he made it sounded really current – he just gets better. Kara says he really went for it tonight – the vocal was fire. Simon tells him it was on the money, full stop!
Adam admits that he underestimated Aaron Kelly’s voice. He coached him to have some swagger and really commit to it! Aaron comes out rockin’ Blue Suede Shoes and really has a sweet, growling sound at times. Randy liked when he broke into the bluesy parts. Ellen thinks he did a really good job. Kara tells him he’s out of his comfort zone, and she likes it – he seemed younger and more current! Simon disagrees, saying the arrangement was old-fashioned and it was karaoke – he wasn’t crazy about it.
Siobhan Magnus, a true Elvis fan, tells Ryan Seacrest that his rags to riches story inspires her. Adam met with Siobhan and he thought her arrangement was sleepy, so he helped her pep it up. Siobhan comes out to perform Suspicious Minds in a cream color dress and boots. She hits her signature high notes, but the tune just doesn’t feel current. She has been making odd song choices lately. Randy says he has missed her big vocals – she can sing! Ellen agrees, adding that she liked it a lot. Kara admits she’s confused by Siobhan’s ‘two voices’. Simon thinks she seems like she was put in a time machine and has lost who she was two or three weeks ago.
Adam advised Mike Lynche to get a little more theatrical with In the Ghetto. He thinks he has a great voice. Michael perches on the edge of the stage tonight in an effort to connect with the crowd as he delivers a simple, acoustic rendition of the song. Randy says the song was sleepy, but the vocals were hot. Ellen is glad they saved him. Kara tells him he sang the song well. Simon tells him it was a terrific song choice!
Katie Stevens is singing Baby What You Want Me To Do, and tells Adam Lambert that it represents her frustration with the judges mixed messages. Adam shows her how to really let it out! Katie hits the stage in black tights, a sassy top, and exhibits some real attitude! Randy tells her she had nice vocals and was letting the vibes out! Ellen calls it a horny song – due to the brass back-up! Kara says she just showed them! Simon thought it was loud and annoying – he didn’t like it very much.
Casey James is doing some bluesy old-school Elvis with Lawdy Miss Claudy. Adam gave him some pointers on how to add drama to his voice. Casey takes the stage in simple clothes with his acoustic guitar and belts out a soulful rendition of the tune. Randy tells him it was another solid performance. Ellen liked it. Kara says it fell short for her. Simon calls it a missed opportunity, adding that it was forgettable.
Tomorrow night on the American Idol results show two hopefuls head home, and Adam Lambert will perform!
