For the third year in a row,Â American Idol has used its powers for good, raising money for charitable organizations around the world through the star-studded fundraiser event, Idol Gives Back. The special, which raised over $140 million in the past two years, aired on Wednesday, April 21st and brought in another whopping $45 million. On Wednesday, April 21st,Â American Idol raised $45 million for charities around the globe through its celebrity sponsored Idol Gives Back special. Broadcasted live from theÂ American Idol stage and the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, the fundraising extravaganza was hosted by Queen Latifah and featured performances from huge stars like Sir Elton John,Â Carrie Underwood, Mary J. Blige, Annie Lennox, and the Black Eyed Peas. The special also included guest appearances by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, Victoria Beckham, Wanda Sykes, George Lopez, Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, andÂ David Cook.
The fundraising effort raised $45 million for domestic and international charities like Children’s Health Fund, Feeding America, Malaria No More, Save the Children’s U.S. Programs, and the United Nations Foundation. “Once again, I am over overwhelmed by the generosity of the American Idol viewers, our sponsors and our special benefactors.Â I am so thankful to all of the celebrity guests and performers who appeared Wednesday night to support Idol Gives Backâ€ saidÂ American Idol creator,Â Simon Fuller.
The exact total of funds raised is still yet to be determined as iTunes has agreed to donate the net proceeds from sales of the Top 7Â American Idol performances to Idol Gives Back. Select performances from Idol Gives Back will also be available for purchase on iTunes.
