FOX begins American Idol tonight with Ryan Seacrest welcoming the remaining six contestants, and announcing that the Idol Gives Back event of last week raised over 45 million dollars! He then introduces the judges, Randy Jackson, Ellen Degeneres, Kara DioGuardi, and Simon Cowell. Shania Twain is the celebrity mentor tonight. Read on for all of the highlights as the six hopefuls perform Shania’s songs…
Lee Dewyze is singing Still the One. In practice, Shania warned him that he was rushing the guitar a bit. Lee takes the stage and performs a slower arrangement dressed in a suit jacket, white shirt and loosened tie. Randy says it started out pitchy, but he found his sweet spot. Ellen thinks he makes every song his own. Kara says he’s come a long way – it was a good job. Simon feels it was the perfect song out of Shania’s catalog for him.
Shania coaches Mike Lynche to really feel the song Since You’ve Been Gone. He begins on stage sitting on the stairs, then stands up and slowly moves toward the audience as he croons. Randy thinks Mike’s found his niche, and Ellen agrees. Kara felt the connection and appreciates that the most – great job! Simon says the vocals were spot on, but the performance was a little wet – a bit girly!
Oddly, when Shania works with Casey James, she senses that he’s lacking inner confidence. Casey takes the stage to perform Don’t with his hair down looking delicious. He perches on a stool with his acoustic and delivers a solid rendition of the tune. Randy calls it one of the best Casey James performances yet. Ellen thinks it was beautiful – his best to date. Kara tells Casey he showed all of his emotions in that performance, and he needs to keep it up! Simon tells Casey he agrees with Randy that it was his best performance so far. He encourages Casey to give Shania a kiss – he does!
Crystal Bowersox is the next to go a little country. Crystal chose No One Needs To Know, and Shania coached her to remember how it applies to her life. Crystal jokes it’s a hint to her boyfriend! She takes the stage with her guitar, and is backed up by steel drums among other things. Her version is pretty folksy and twangy. Randy admits it’s not his favorite performance of hers, but likes that she tried something different. Ellen agrees with that, but says there’s nothing she can’t do. Kara tells her it was believable, so she responded, but it wasn’t her best. Simon thought it was limp, saying he didn’t feel any conviction from her – it’s the only week they haven’t liked her performance.
Shania tells Aaron Kelly, in practice, not to be preoccupied with hitting the notes in his song choice, Just the Way You Are. Aaron only sits on a stool, but he delivers a strong, heartfelt version of the tune. Randy and Ellen are both impressed with his depth. Randy calls him the country artist of the show. Kara really like it as well, commenting on how he changed a lyric to suit him. Simon says he’s been struggling, but tonight he did really well – right on!
Siobhan Magnus is singing Any Man of Mine tonight. Shania advised her to make it come alive. Siobhan takes the stage looking edgier than the past few weeks, but her arrangement is a real mix of styles. She finishes with the big impressive notes! Randy loved it, loved the whole punk/country look too. Ellen did too – fantastic! Kara tells her she’s baaaack! Simon thought the song was perfect, but likens the scream at the end to giving birth. He chuckles, and says it was fun.
Tomorrow night Rascal Flatts, Lady Antebellum, and Shakira perform!
