Billboard has spoken and they deem Kelly Clarkson as the most successful American Idol star. The magazine ranked former Idol contestants, like Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, and David Cook, on the list of Idol‘s Top 24. Keep reading to find out why Clarkson ranked No. 1 and which other stars made the list…
According to Billboard magazine, Kelly Clarkson, the first aspiring singer to be crowned American Idol in season one of the hit show, is the most successful star to come from the FOX singing competition. This may come as a bit of a shock, especially considering the major success of season 4 winner, Carrie Underwood, but the magazine recently ranked the top 24 determined by a number of factors and Clarkson snagged the No. 1 spot.
The reason for Billboard’s ranking? Since her days on Idol, Kelly Clarkson has sold 10.6 million albums, 15.9 million in track sales, and she has been played on the radio almost 4.3 million times! Although season 4 winner, Carrie Underwood, has sold more albums than Clarkson (11.5 million albums total, to be exact), she hasn’t fared as well in track sales or radio plays. Of course, Clarkson has had three more years in the spotlight than Underwood, which could be the cause for her greater success.
The surprising third place ranking goes to a guy who didn’t even win American Idol: Chris Daughtry, whose band, Daughtry, had found major success since his stint on the show in 2006. Rounding out the top five are season 6 winner, Jordin Sparks, and season 7 winner, David Cook.
