Tonight on FOX‘s American Idol 9, Ryan Seacrest presents the Top Four remaining contestants, and the judges, Simon Cowell, Ellen Degeneres, Kara DioGuardi, and Randy Jackson. The mentor for this week is Jamie Foxx, who provided guidance to the hopefuls as they prepared ‘Songs from the Movies’, and also paired off for duets! Jamie comes out with t-shirts, explaining that he had two types made up – ‘contestant’ and ‘artist’, and would give each member of the Top Four the one they deserve…
Lee Dewyze worked with Jamie Foxx, who got right in his face, first. Jamie wound up giving him the ‘artist’ t-shirt, warning him not to make him change his mind! Lee takes the stage and performs Kiss From A Rose. He is in a very casual, comfortable zone and the audience seems to like it. Randy didn’t like it – he says Lee did nothing with the song and it was just okay. Ellen agrees he could have done more with it, but feels he is so good anyway. Kara says he got lost a little, but he is still great. Simon declares that it verged on karaoke and he was trying too hard to sound like the original.
Michael Lynche, who is feeling pressure to get in the Top Three, had trouble remembering his words when he worked with Jamie Foxx, so he was given the ‘contestant’ shirt, but wouldn’t take it! Mike comes out in leather jacket and jeans to sing I’m Only Human. He does a good job, and gets stronger toward the end. Randy, once again, wasn’t taken with his performance. Ellen and Kara agree – he played it safe and it was predictable. Simon says at least he gave it 100% and he felt like he kind of meant it…
Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox are the first pair to perform a duet. They are both playing acoustic guitars and sing Falling Slowly from the movie Once. Facing each other on the stage, they do an awesome job! Randy declares it could be a hit right now! Ellen calls them the new Captain and Tenille! Kara calls it one of the best Idol moments – they brought out the best in each other and that’s what duets are about! Simon says it was a fantastic song!
Casey James has chosen to sing Mrs. Robinson, and Jamie Foxx prompts him to be seductive. He wins the ‘artist’ shirt! Casey gets intimate with the audience to perform the tune live. He sits down, surrounded by the crowd, playing a guitar, and delivers a sweet version of the song. Randy immediately teases that the song was for Kara! Getting serious, he says it was a laid back and cool version of the song. Ellen likes that he came back stronger this week – she liked it! Kara acknowledges that he is fighting to stay in the competition by getting up close with the audience, which is uncomfortable for him. Simon didn’t think the song has the substance required on this important night, adding it was a strange song choice just like the others tonight.
Crystal Bowersox is going to sing I’m Alright by Kenny Loggins. Jamie Foxx caused her to be a little starstruck. He coached her, and then gave her the ‘artist’ shirt. Crystal takes the stage live and though she’s rooted to the mike with her acoustic, she delivers a great, raucous version of the song! Randy loved that she tried to switch it up to fit her, though it wasn’t his favorite performance. Ellen thinks she made the song better! Kara agrees with Ellen. Simon tells Crystal she is back in the game.
Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman is the duet tune for Casey James and Mike Lynche. They stand side-by-side wearing black with acoustic guitars and perform a beautiful, mellow version that sets the women in the crowd to squealing! Randy thought it was very nice – they sounded really good! Ellen says she has loved a woman! Kara calls the duets tonight incredible! Simon wants to give the artist t-shirts to the duets tonight – they were better than the solos!
On tomorrow night’s results show on FOX, the Top Three will be revealed, and there will be performances by Daughtry, Fantasia, and Bon Jovi!
