Ty Pennington opens the season finale of Extreme Makeover Home Edition on ABC by saying that this season has been all about team work, and tonight’s episode in Pine Mountain Valley, Georgia, is one of the most inspiring yet! Jeremy Williams is a football coach whose family home is too small for two disabled individuals to live in – he has Lou Gerhig’s Disease and the Williams’ son, Jacob, was born with Spina Bifida and is paralyzed from the waist down. Helping out on the bus this time around are NFL Baltimore Orioles player Michael Oher, and the Tuohy’s – the family who inspired the movie The Blind Side.
Ty and the design team arrive for Door Knock Day, and tell high school sweethearts Jeremy and Jennifer that they, along with their son, and daughter, Josie, will be vacationing at the Adaptive Sports Center in Crested Butte, Colorado. They do a tour of the house and see the limitations the family is faced with in light of their physical challenges. Ty sheds tears as Jeremy describes what he’s told his young son as he faces his own imminent death.
The builders from Nationwide Homes, and the mass of volunteers arrive and see the Williams family off on vacation.
In Colorado, special equipment allows the family to downhill ski together, as back home, the design team splits up the tasks. Ty gets in touch with the family via video so they can watch the Greenville Patriots football team demo their old home. ESPNÂ football analysts Herm Edwards, Mark Schlereth, Mark May and Desmond Howard are on hand to call the play!
As the new, modular house is brought in, Tracy helps Mrs. Tuohy with the redo of Coach Williams’ football team’s locker room! Paul is working on a digital, light-up room for Jacob, and Michael and Ty are going through Jeremy and Jennifer’s old love letters. Tracy is making Josie’s cowgirl room, complete with a bed that looks like bales of hay! The team is also making a therapy room, in which they will incorporate the cartoon character, Handy Manny, who is Jacob’s fave.
Ty contacts the family to open their gift box – it’s a carrot. Ty tells them to find someone who might need it – they find Demi Lovato! Jacob and Josie are stunned as they give her the carrot for the snowman she has made, and she sings them a song!
Wilmer Valderrama, who is the voice of Handy Manny, arrives to help put the finishing touches on the therapy room at the new house. Meanwhile, the family is brought home early to see the new Jeremy Williams Field House for the football team. The players join them, and Jeremy tears up as he thinks of the day he won’t be able to coach any longer, and how difficult that will be. Tracy announces that CVS Pharmacy has invited Jeremy to be an honorary co-chair on their team against ALS, and they are paying off his medical debt!
It’s time to Move That Bus! The Williams family is overcome with emotion – Jeremy and Jennifer sob – as they take in the sight of the new house. The builders come forward to say that Columbus State have given Jacob and Josie scholarships, and that the rest of the mortgage has been paid off. Inside, Jennifer declares the accessible, spacious interior to be awesome. She embraces her husband. Ty comes in and takes them to see the therapy room and equipment out back! Paul tells them that CVS Pharmacy provided everything, including the play structures in the yard.
The Williams family goes to check out the rest of the house. Jacob exclaims, “I love it!” when he sees his new light-up room, complete with washroom. Josie screams when she gets a load of her cowgirl/horse themed room. She climbs up to her loft bed which is like a stall in a barn! Jennifer is overwhelmed by the master bedroom. She and Jeremy marvel at the use of their love letters in the design. Jennifer says she now has her prince and her castle! Ty welcomes them home.
