Ryan Seacrest opens tonight’s episode of American Idol on FOX by bringing out the final three contestants and introducing the judges, Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Ellen Degeneres, and Kara DioGuardi! Casey James is kicking off the show with his song choice, Okay, It’s Alright With Me

Casey James hits the stage in jeans and a blazer. He accompanies himself on guitar, so he’s obviously comfortable.  He performs the tune, which is a little understated for this point in the competition. Randy says it was just okay for him. Ellen wishes he’d brought them something much bigger than that.  Kara feels the song was too unknown to resonate with the crowd. Simon hopes there is something more substantial to come from him – it was a dud song choice, but he sounded good.

Crystal Bowersox chose Come To My Window for her opening song tonight.  She too accompanies herself on guitar (and harmonica!) as she performs live. Crystal is somewhat more upbeat than Casey, and seems to capture the crowd’s interest.  Randy didn’t love the arrangement, but did like her vocal on it. Ellen thinks it was a good song choice and she was in her comfort zone. Kara agrees she got lost in her arrangement, but it was still good.  Simon also feels it wasn’t a stunning version of the song, but he notes she hasn’t compromised herself as an artist.

Lee Dewyze is next up. He’s selected Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd to perform live.  In jacket and jeans, Lee does a predictably strong rendition of the tune which is right up his alley.  The arrangement is a tad slow,  just like the other two before him.  Randy calls it a great song choice, and thinks Lee if feeling he could win this. Ellen agrees he’s shown he is taking this seriously. Kara says round one goes to Lee! Simon tells him that was absolutely on the money, adding that he crushed the other two!

Next up are the judges’ song choices for the contestants. Randy and Kara chose Daughters for Casey James.  Emerging on stage, Casey delivers a heartfelt, smooth rendition of the John Mayer hit.  Randy says that fit him like a glove. Ellen agrees, and says a lot of people will be voting for him – it was beautiful.  Kara feels that he shines showing his vulnerable, sensible side.  Simon thinks it was much better than the first song,  but thinks Kara and Randy could have given him a tune with a bigger vocal climax.  Arguing about the song ensues, but Simon tells Casey he sounded really good regardless.

Ellen chose Crystal Bowersox”s song for tonight – it’s Maybe I’m Amazed by Paul McCartney.  Crystal comes out in black from head to toe, and without her guitar. She strolls the stage and positively belts out the tune – fabulous job! She gets a standing ‘o’! Randy says great song, great vocals! Ellen tells Crystal she couldn’t have asked for more. Kara says she really showed parts of her voice they hadn’t heard before tonight – she did risky things that paid off! Simon admits he was surprised by the song choice, but now he gets it. He feels she’ll be thanking Ellen for putting her in the final.

Lee Dewyze has his song chosen by Simon. The selection is Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen.  Simon tells Ryan he picked it to give Lee a ‘moment’. Lee plays guitar and has a choir backing him up. He delivers a powerful performance, really seeming to feel it! Randy calls it his biggest moment on the show.  Ellen agrees that Simon chose the right song – it was stunning! Kara says he’s what the show is all about, calling him the heart of the show, and saying he owned tonight. Simon tells Lee he proved he’s a fantastic singer, a great person, and he really hopes he makes it to the final.

After tonight’s performances,  it’s looking like a Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox final – what do you think?

Justin Bieber appears on tomorrow night’s results show. See you then!
