It’s a big night on FOX as the American Idol 9 finale will see either Crystal Bowersox or Lee Dewyze crowned as the newest idol, and also, it is judge Simon Cowell’s last show.Â Ryan Seacrest opens by introducingÂ Randy Jackson, Ellen Degeneres, Kara DioGuardi, and Simon. The camera pans to show a good number of former Idol contestants in the audience.Â Crystal and Lee come out, and their hometown fans are shown.Â First up tonight, the Top Ten perform together again!
In private school uniforms, the Top Ten do a live performance ofÂ School’s Out. Casey James enthusiastically introduces rocker Alice Cooper, who joins them to sing his song on stage!
Next up, Ryan introduces a tribute to Simon Cowell, showing some of the funniest moments of his time judging on Idol, and the other judges cracking on him! Ryan says there will be many more shared memories throughout the show tonight.
Reigning American Idol, Kris Allen takes the stage to perform next, doing his latest tune, The Truth.
Michael Lynche is next to sing, performing Takin’ It To the Streets by the Doobie Brothers. He’s joined by Michael McDonald from the group!
Ryan next introduces a song set to some of Simon’s best insults – it’s performed by comedian/actor Dane Cook! Several of Simon’s most infamous rejects come on stage at the end.
The girls from the Top Ten sing Fighter by Christina Aguilera, who joins them partway through the song, and performs a newer song as well.Â Simon Fuller remembers Simon Cowell’s time with the show.
The guys from the Top Ten do a medley of Hall & Oates songs, and then Darryl Hall and John Oates take the stage to perform You Make My Dreams Come True!
Crystal’s fans in Ohio are shown again, and Ryan talks to Crystal’s dad in the audience, before introducing her. Mamma Sox begins an Alanis Morrisette song, and then introduces Alanis, who sings along with her!
Carrie Underwood, a former Idol winner, takes the stage to sing her tune, Undo It.Â We then see footage of Crystal and Lee thinking they are going to a photo shoot, but instead being met by Kris Allen who presents them with new cars from Ford!
Casey James performs Every Rose Has It’s Thorn by Poison, and the crowd goes wild as he is joined by Celebrity Apprentice winner, and Poison front man, Bret Michaels! Bret looks and sings fantastic, belying his recent serious health concerns.
Lee Dewyze is out next singing a medley of Chicago songs. The band joins Lee for a jam on stage! Lee’s fans in Illinois are shown on the big screen after! Next, a montage of Simon Cowell’s flirting moments are shown.Â Ryan then introduces General Larry Platt to sing Pants on the Ground!Â Stunningly, William Hung (of She Bangs fame) joins him!
Paula Abdul is on a video recalling how it all began with Simon (and Randy) on American Idol.Â She says through all the ups and downs, he taught her to be strong. Paula blows him a kiss, but then appears live on the stage! Simon stands and applauds, as does everyone else!Â She greets the other judges, then jokes about the real reason she left the show, saying he’s backstage, and it’s Simon’s turn to feed him! She remarks that American Idol won’t be the same without Simon, but as she knows, it will go on.Â More Simon highlights are shown, set to Frank Sinatra’s My Way.
Kelly Clarkson returns to the Idol stage to sing, along with Reuben Studdart, Fantasia, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, and Kris Allen. Then, wearing white, comes a whole boatload of top finalists from past seasons. Paula sits on Simon’s lap as they watch! After the song, Ryan makes Simon come up on stage.Â Simon makes a speech acknowledging his emotion, saying the show will go forward, and thanking everyone for their support and their sense of humor. He adds that it’s been a blast!
The Top Ten from this season of Idol sing the beginnings of a song and are joined by none other than newly-cropped, Janet Jackson! She sings a couple of tunes, including Nothing and Nasty Boys.
We see a final montage of Crystal, the single mom, and Lee, the paint salesman, and their journey to the final two. They sing I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends, and introduce Joe Cocker, who joins them!
Ryan asks for the lights to be dimmed one last time. After the nationwide vote, the winner of American Idol 2010 is Lee Dewyze!! Lee seems overcome and can hardly express anything besides ‘thank you’. He finally says, “I’m so happy right now.”Â He tries to compose himself, and sings Beautiful Day amid the confetti!
