Simon Cowell‘s tenure as a judge on American Idol is officially over. The Brit’s last show was this season’s finale, leaving a vacant spot on the Idol judging panel. One rocker–and reality TV vet–is vying for the position: Celebrity Apprentice winner and former Poison frontman, Bret Michaels. Keep reading for more details on why Michaels thinks he’d be a good replacement and what Cowell thinks about the possibility…

Over the past few months, there has been a lot of speculation about who should replace Simon Cowell as a judge on American Idol. Howard Stern? Perez Hilton? Jamie Foxx? Harry Connick, Jr.? It seems that everyone has been considered at one point or another, but a new rocker would like to place himself in the running: Celebrity Apprentice winner and former Poison frontman, Bret Michaels.

“I don’t know if it’s true, but I could possibly be a judge on American Idol,” Michaels said at a recent concert. The speculation came after the season finale when Simon Cowell reportedly suggested that the rocker be his replacement. “I was honored that Simon said that,” Michaels told PEOPLE, “and I would be honored to do it.”

Not only does Michaels have Simon Cowell‘s stamp of approval, he also has the experience necessary to succeed in the role. “I’m talking old-school, paying-my-dues experience,” he says. “I used to move the pool table out of the way to play for people six nights a week, playing five sets a night, where I had to announce the dinner special. I grew up the old-fashioned way. I would have done anything to have a platform like American Idol when I was growing up. For a lot of these young musicians, I’d be able to give them incredibly awesome and very, very real advice. Not just the music, but their attitude and what it’s gonna take. Because everyone forgets one simple thing: Once you get chosen as the winner, you still have a big road ahead.”

Michaels also claims that he wouldn’t shy away from being brutally honest with the contestants on American Idol, just like  Simon Cowell. “I would bring my heart and my soul and amazingly honest and truthful advice,” he says. “And I would tell them if I thought their chances of making it were really slim — and how to fix that. Because my chances of making it were extremely slim. It’s come from brute determination.”
