Now that Simon Cowell is officially finished with American Idol, the acerbic Brit reflects on his time at the judging panel. During his nine year stint on the FOX singing competition, Cowell has seen thousands of brilliant, bad, and bizarre performances. He reveals which performances were the best and worst during his time on American Idol…
Simon Cowell spent the past nine years seated at the judging panel on American Idol, critiquing the good, the bad, and the ugly of musical performances. During his time on the show, Cowell’s had the chance to witness some musical numbers that were awe-inspiring and some that were just plain awful. As he reflects back on his time as a judge, he recalls the best and worst of American Idol‘s performances.
For Simon Cowell, identifying the worst performance in American Idol history is a no-brainer: season two runner-up Clay Aiken‘s version of Grease. “It was abysmal!” Simon Cowell says. ”I remember saying on the night, ‘You sound terrible, you look awful!’ Two years later, he came into my dressing room with a puppy still really, really upset.”
On the flip side, Cowell can also easily recall what he deems the best performance and it comes from a former winner: Fantasia Barrino. “But I think, and I’ve said this before in an interview, the performance I liked best was when Fantasia sang ‘Summertime,’” Cowell says.
Now that his time on American Idol is through, Simon Cowell says the one person he’ll miss most is fellow judge, Randy Jackson. ”What I love about Randy is he’s always in a good mood, genuinely,” Cowell said. “If it wasn’t for him, I think we would’ve gone nuts three or four years ago.”
